How similar is a '81 Johnson 35hp to a '88 Evinrude '30?

I currently have an '81 J35 and have an opportunity to get a parts engine that is an '88 E30. Are they the same block? Are many parts inter-changable? Parts I would be interested in are carb, LU, stator etc. Thanks.

The 35 hp became the 30 hp when they re-rated the hp. Off the top of my head...the lower units interchange, the tiller arm and steering bracket are different, both have CDI-2 ignition and I believe the carbs are different, but they may interchange. You'll have to check the BRP site. What's wrong with the 30hp? I've seen the 35hp so I know why you want a parts motor! lol

actually, I believe, they are similar, but.
the lower units are different. as they slightly changed the gear ratio, and the
shift linkage is much different.
the carbs are different, the 81 still used, I think, a choke, the 88 has the primer. and the 88 doesn't use the intake baffle either. the later carb might also have a mid-speed jet, the older ones just have high speed and low speed.

I can't seem to access the BRP catalogs to prove this, but I think you are thinking of the pre-1980 35 hp lower unit. I believe they changed the lower unit in 1978-79. I also believe, that all 1980's thru-hub 20-35 hp shared the same lower unit, which has the shift disconnect in the lower unit as opposed to the exhaust housing. Now there may have been some revisions made to it such as gear ratio, but I still think they will interchange. Of course, you really need to consult the parts catalogs to know for sure.

You are certainly right about the carbs. I don't believe the 1988 has a mid-speed jet.
