Ever try to pull a swimming live bait away from a interested HUNGRY fish ? I can not reel fast enough.
No :D , couple of things ,
1stly most of the live baits I have seen are pretty self motivated when it comes to distancing themselves from a hungry predator ........I cant see why you would need to wind at all , and I believe the idea is for the hungry predator ( not you ....yet ) to eat the live bait , although if you keep pulling the bait away from the hungry predator that might be all there is for dinner
I think I would like to spend a day fishing with you :):)

You need a faster reel.....

Put together a combo to chase Spanish Mackerel a few years ago. Requires a rod capable of throwing 1-3 oz of metal and a reel capable of skipping the bait across the top the water.

The rod was easy, but I was surprised at the slow retrieval rate of spinning reels. Took quite a bit of research to find a reel that I could cast more than a couple of times until my wrist was shot.

At the time, ended up with a 4XXX Diawa Capricorn with a retrieval rate of 39" per crank. Some are pushing 45" per crank these days

Year ago I had a Diawa Capricorn, can’t recall the size. Had it on a catfish set up we used on all night sits on the bank. Pulled in some hefty cats with it. Decent reel as I recall.
