How to adjust gear alignment on Chrysler 35 HP outboard motor

I have a Chrysler 35 HP outboard motor on my boat. Model number is 356HA (1971 I believe...)

I'm new at this boating lark and though I can find similar questions to this one but with different engines I don't have quite enough knowledge to translate answers to those questions for this engine.

I had an incident a month back which resulted in the boat being stuck, grounded, for a week.

Since retrieving it I've cleaned it all up and have things running again. The engine runs beautifully (though the choke keeps popping my fuses since; guess the solenoid is shot..)

I took it out to test yesterday and found that it goes into reverse perfectly, though going into forward is a bit of a pain. As it tries to engage you can hear the gears grid as it's not quite getting in there. A quick push on the throttle and it engages.

After some research it would appear that I likely need to adjust the cables a little to allow the engine to engage the gears correctly. Though that's about as far as I get - can't find anything, tutorial or otherwise, specific to this engine.

The image below is of the side of my engine, showing the shifter and cables.

I wonder if someone would be so kind as to point out what I should/shouldn't be adjusting in order to get this thing to go into gear correctly.

Thanks in advance :)

Your attachment is showing as a red X as mine on previous tries with this upgrade. Why? They finally showed at one point.

In my attachments close by related to shifting, I showed the leg on my 1970 35 hp Chrysler and Lower Unit with ref to checking and adjusting problems. There is a coupler that control centering your L/U shift rod in neutral between Reverse/Forward that let you equally shift into them. The key in starting the coupler on both threads at the exact same time. I got it done and d/n want to loose that centering changing impellers again. During the process I saw I would rather pull the cotter at the shift rod and have since. It is tight and I use a longer bolt/nut to hold and give me time to rem/replace the cotter with needle nose pliers.

I have found good info in Old “Clymer Manuals” in the Public Library, and personal copy from a used book store. There are probably some gifts vs sales on this site if you pay the shipping. Also ck EBay, Xs Chrysler CD that is not easy to use IMO but has info.

Hi, thanks for getting back to me.

I'm really sorry, though I don't really understand what you're saying? With regards to the red X - are you not able to see the image I attached? If not, let me know and I'll re-attach it.

I also don't see any attachments on your reply - if that's the other thing you're referring to?

I’m not able to see the image you attached vs a Red X where it should be as on my replies showing the Red X. If you are seeing images and I am seeing the Red X. I probably need to change something in my settings related to the recent upgrade vs seeing a Red X before.

Such as: at the link below is a ref I made vs sending it again that has been showing the Red X but is showing the images now as it showed originally and left.

Yep, sorry I can't see any of the images you may have posted. They also don't show on the page you linked to.

Guess I'll just have to have a tinker with the engine and see what happens. I thought perhaps this would have been a simple request :)

Thanks for trying though.

Try and find a manual or info on line to assist you. Otherwise, I have seen some mistakes that could have been avoided. If you have some experience on the basics that is a different story. Such as: have you ever changes an impeller or seen an impeller changed? Have you ever changed the Lower Unit’s gear oil? These needs can cost you quick without some knowledge of what you are doing.

I have owned my 35hp Chrysler since 1984-85 (A Dream!) w/o one major problem thanks to manuals and my late 60s through now Small Engines and Auto experiences.

Please post your progress, I’ll be watching. Plus, I will share if I feel I have helpful info. I have pics and text documenting most of the basic repairs/maintenance.

Thanks. As i mentioned, I have found plenty of info on other engines, though wasn't sure how to translate it to my engine. Hence why posting online here for some help :)

The only manual I have is the service manual and it doesn't go into any detail on the linkage.

Oil changes are no issue. I also know my way around an engine a little, just never had to change anything to do with the gear linkage, again hence asking here :)

I would wager your 1984 engine had a very similar layout to mine. Did you ever adjust the gear linkage/cables? If so, any pointers?

1970 35hp Chrysler owned since 1984-85. I have tackled the linkage “mentioned and my preferred” due to routine impeller checks vs replacing once 2009. I feel fresh water use only, little use and original probably good rubber spared me.

In the Iboat site is tons on info using search. My contributions related to the 35hp Chrysler on what I found and shared should be under user name wickware w/o looking. Let me know if my 1,000+ post are not there. The 35hp is the same as 45/55hp in most cases except piston, cyl and maybe 1 vs 2 carbs, long or short Lower/Unit. Enjoy as I Have!!!
