How to adjust surge coupler

I have a stainless ball with a 1" shank. It is very hard to get the coupler latch down on it, due to the ball's "stem" being larger than my other ball, a chrome ball with a 3.4" shank. I do not want to use the 3/4" ball in a ball mount with a 1" hole.

How do I adjust the internal part of the latch to "loosen" it up a tad? I don't see a bolt on it.

The diameter of the shank(threaded portion) should have no bearing on the size of the stem that goes up to the actual ball. They should be the exact same size.

They absolutely are though, which I found weird. I'll snap a pic if I remember when I get home.

The coupler shuts easily on the smaller one, but it's a hassle on the larger one. They are both 2" balls BTW.
