Howdy - I was told there was a sticky, or at least a link where I can find how to replace the lower gear oil in my 83 Johnson 15hp outboard.

Can someone please send me a link to it? I expect to get my repair manual on Friday, but I'm planning to take the boat out on Saturday morning.

Thanks!

There it is; I knew it was there somewhere.

Another question: I was going to use Mobile 1 75W90 gear oil. It's not particularly for marine applications but it's the same grade. Is this a bad idea?

There is little emulsifiers in conventional gear oil. Therefore any water will settle out and pool at the bottom causing rust on lower gear case components.

Also, some extreme duty oils have large amounts of Zinc which can dissolve brass bushings over time....

Just use marine gear oil ... also has anti-foaming agents, etc.

I just bought some from the local boat shop. They cater to fancy boaters, but I guess the $10 quart of marine oil will work for my over-sized bathtub. ;-D
