How to check voltage

2004 Mercury 75HP 2-stroke, volt meter not working how can I check to see if system is charging or if volt meter is faulty?

get a hand held volt meter.
Check the batt voltage, then start the motor, check the batt voltage again.
Not running should about 12 to 12.5.
Running should 13 to 14.

Try using a batter charger with an alternator check mode. This might show how many volt is being put out by the alternator.
