My steering cable snapped, so im gonna buy a whole new assembly. I detached the black jacket hose that leads to the motor from the rotary. I pulled the snapped cable out of the rotary(though it seems like there should be alot more). I guess the rest is in the jacket hose or in the rotary itself. Im trying to take the rotary apart from the steering column. It seems there is a pin on the it holding the steering wheel together with it. How do i get the rotary off so i can replace the whole system? And how do i get the excess cable out of the jacket if thats where it is? Thanks

Missing necessary info. What make and model, what year? Is the steering Teleflex or another brand?
On mine, the cable came out by turning the steering wheel. The steering wheel came off via a nut under the cap at the wheel center and three bolts held the mechanism onto the helm.

its a 1984 rollin 14ft with a 35hp o/b. i dont think im supposed to throw away the black jacket that goes down to the motor right? I didnt think a new assembly comes with that 1 inch thick metal/aluminum tubing coming from the rotary to the engine that houses the cable. And i took the bolt off of the steering wheel, but it still wont come up. The pin on the rotary has to come off b/c when you spin the wheel, the pin turns too, so its attached to the rod that goes through the rotary into the steering wheel. I attached what the assembly looks like:

Mark, once you remove the nut from the center of the steering wheel you will find that the wheel will not just come off. Usually the steering wheel fits on a tapered shaft which extends from the helm assembly. Sometimes the steering wheel can be a little hard to get off. Read the following thread and see if this helps.

Ayuh,... That too.... I'd replace the Whole Thing,.... Helm,+ Cable assembley...
It's almost Cheaper that way because of the pricing structure..

Just reuse the Steering Wheel...

Re: How to detach the helm assembly?

Ok, got the steering wheel off and detached the rotary. Is there supposed to be cable in the blacket metal/plastic housing that runs down to the engine. Since the cable snapped, im guessing there has to be, unless of course im way off. I loosen the nut holding the blacket jacket down by the engine so i could push something through it to get the cable out, but i cant seem to pull away the metal housing from the engine. Any tips or please tell me what im doing wrong.

Ayuh,... That's the next step,... Try some Heat,+/ or penetrating oil...
