How to determine what year powerhead V-4 crossflow?

Hello,

To make a long story short, I purchased off ebay what I thought (and was listed) to be a replacement rebuilt powerhead for a 1978 Johnson 115 V-4. The powerhead I received looked similar, but had a different bolt pattern at the base and is therefore not a fit. I'm in the process of trying to get this rectified with the balky seller, but is there any way to know what year powerhead by the numbers on the powerhead itself?

If so, I can look on the powerhead and post them and see if anyone can tell me what year the wrong powerhead is? It almost had to be an earlier 70's model, but I'd just like to know for sure what I'm dealing with and make sure I get the seller to send me a correct one.

Thanks for any replies!

There is a quarter size welsh plug on top of the port side head. It will be under the #3 coil on the powerhead. When you get the model number, google it or google old-omc and you can see the year. For example I have a 1975 115. The model number is 115593. The fourth digit is the year. Hope that is helpfull.

I'm sorry I have an evinrude. Yours will be alittle different but that site will have the model number for your engine as well.

These early crossflows all have the model number stamped on a casting plug on top of one of the cylinders. That model number is key to determining the year. See picture. This plug denotes a 1975 135 hp.

The easiest difference to spot between the 1978 block and 1979 up is that the 78 mounting blocks are screwed to the block while the 1979 blocks are cast in.
