I am trying to change my impeller in the water pump and have the lower unit unbolted and it dropped down about a 1/4-3/8" It feels like it is just hanging on the shift rod at the moment. I tried softly tapping with a rubber mallet on the lower unit trying to get it to drop on down. I now think I need to unbolt the shift rod, but am unsure how to go about that. The top of the shift rod has a small bend in it and I am unsure that I will be able to pull it all of the way out of the bottom with the lower unit, assuming that it stays attached to the lower unit. It also appears that the connection of the shift rod to the shift linkages is buried under the bottom of the motor and behind the carbs, and i'm not sure how I would get under there to even get it apart much less back together. Long story short.... Help. I've had this boat and motor about a year now and am enjoying learning how to work on it. Each time I take it apart I learn something new.

The bend in the shift rod will slide right out of the rubber grommets once it's disconnected. It's screwed into the gear case but DO NOT screw it in or out as that will cause a shift rod misadjustment issue. It looks like your shift rod is attached with a screw/bolt like the older models. It is right under the carbs and you may have to remove the starter to get to it with a socket with extension and u-joint adapter on your ratchet. The bolt head would be on the port side.

A service manual for your motor would come in very handy since you enjoy working on your motor.

Agree + 1 with the service manual.

Yep.. I definitely agree on the service manual. I could have saved myself some time so far. I consider it a lesson well learned. I thought about waiting to change this thing until I ordered the manual but I thought to myself this afternoon it looked easy enough.

Well so far I have the carb, starter, and fuel pump all off. I can now see under there a bit to try and figure out how to get this thing off. I took a couple of pictures and attached them. If i'm understanding correctly the bolt I want to try to back out is on the right hand side of the shift rod. I came inside to look at the computer again for a sec. I can see the brass block with a bolt on the bottom side but I think all that connects to is the linkages. I'm wandering do I have to take that brass block off. I've loosened that screw but it doesn't seem to do any good. By the above response about the bolt being on the port side leads me to believe the top of the shift rod is threaded with a bolt installed from the port side. The port side of my motor is completely packed with hoses and wiring and I can see virtually nothing from that way.

I also tried to drop the lower cowling but didn't have any luck there either. Are those even made to be detached? I took all of the bolts out and it appears that the lower cowling is all one piece and I don't see any way that it could be detached.

Looking at the starboard side of the motor you can see the shift rod going under the motor.

Here you can see that brass block on the end of the shift rod and the shift rod coming through the grommet from the bottom.

Another picture of the shift rod.
thanks for all your help.

I just registered for this site so I could ask this exact question on the exact same motor. I just bought this motor and wanted to change out the impeller.(first time to work on a boat motor) I have looked at a few videos but all the videos have their lower cowl off. I took a long look at this motor and I dont believe that it can come off being one piece. Looking forward to reading more about this project.

Well i got it off now. It wasnt until i completely took the bolt out of the brass piece that the shifter lever came loose. I now have the lower unit dropped and the old impeller out. The old one looked fine. Anything else i should be looking at while i have things apart.
Killa - feel free to ask questions. I have a couple of pointers now that i have it apart. I know a few things that you dont have to take apart now.

If you look real close at your first pic at that shift arm you'll see a "C" clip on it. All you have to do is remove that clip and slide the arm over to port. That disconnects the upper shift linkage. Damn I love manuals.

I see that now. Funny how it all makes sense in the rear view mirror. Now I have to figure out how to get that bolt back in on the smaller brass block. This could prove to be a challenge. Other then that i've changed the impeller now. Any tips on flushing out the water system. The original impeller looked fine. i think now part of my problem is some blockage in the water system. I'm going to try to adapt the hose to it from the top side of the motor and flush it backwards. The kids have a water balloon filler spout that may do the trick.

I sure hope you replaced the impeller anyway. Pull and replace the thermostat is a good idea, you can back flush from there too if you haven't put it together yet.

Ok I have started the process of taking my lower unit off. What all needs to come off so that I can get to screw or bolt down by the carbs?

Killa-I'm guessing you don't even have to take off the carb or the starter like I did. Pull the clip out of the shift rod lever that you can see on my first picture above. You can partly see that clip behind the brass rod. Once you pull that clip you can push the shift rod lever to the port side on the motor. In behind the carb and at the bottom of the engine it pushes a pin out of the long shift rod that connects to the lower unit allowing you to pull the long shift rod along with the lower unit off of the bottom of the motor. Taking off the carb probably gives you a better view down there as well as taking off the starter, but I don't think it's necessary to take the shift rod off. Don't take everything apart like I did, it takes a while to put everything back together.

Waterman - Thanks for the idea of pulling the thermostat and washing out from the top. Yes, I went ahead and replaced the impeller while I had it apart. I hooked up a hose to the side of the engine where the water exits and blew things out from the that way. I also took out the thermostat and blew the hose down both directions from the top. I got everything put back together tonight and started it up on the muffs. I had a real pressurized stream of water exiting the back. Long story short I think I had more of a problem with some junk in the water system more so then a bad impeller. But I had never taken it apart since i've owned the boat, so i'm glad I did. It gives me a bit of peace of mind now having gone through it.

So do you have to take the brass bolt out or simply roll the shift lever to port?

No you dont have to take the brass bolt out. There is a pin and washer on the starboard side that when removed allows you to push the shift lever to the port side. When you push the shift lever port side it disengages a pin in the top of the long shift rod going to the lower unit. You can see the pin and washer im talking about in one of the pics i posted above. Let me know if you need me to mark it on the picture.

Thanks for the info. So what is the part number for the manual for this motor? Trying to order one.

You need to order the manual according to the model number to get the correct one.

Could you mark that pin? I bought the manual but it is not clear. Thank you
