Re: How to fill the vertical drive with oil?
I suspect that TC has suggested doing the "Fill from the bottom until it comes out the middle, THEN fill from middle" "program" because it has probably worked. AND that's possibly because the trapped bubble happens ABOVE the middle fill port.
Also, OMC suggested in the early dog-clutch Cobras to initially fill to "FULL" on the dipstick with it RESTING on the top of the threads.
THEN after running the drive briefly, checking the oil-fill level with the dipstick screwed all the way in.....AND THEN topping off if needed.........
BUT if filling it the way OMC recommends in their own OEM manual WORKS EVERY TIME, WHY ON EARTH DO IT DIFFERENT?
AND YES, if you put in the correct amount for your drive, you're GOOD.
BUT ALWAYS CHECK THE LEVEL THE WAY OMC RECOMMENDS EVEN IF YOU THINK YOU PUT IN THE "CORRECT" AMOUNT.
All of us read the wrong page, wrong amount, wrong part number, etc etc sometimes don't we? ["measure" twice, "cut" once right?]
My situation was actually my Brothers when he had my boat! Four Winns Dealer did "service" that included changing the drive oil. Service "professional" didn't bother to put oil in after draining.
Another "Dealer" did the same service in a later year and evidently filled the drive "like a Mercruiser" [from the bottom]
In both cases the drive didn't make it all the way around the lake before seizing
Both dealers did replace the drive with no "lawyering-up" (to their credit!!)!
Cheers,
Rick.
Yeah, but I will bet there was one thing that was not constant.. and that was whoever filled these drives just stopped where they thought it was full, and didn't put 64 ozs in the drive... 64 oz is 64 oz.. and 64 oz's is full.. but don't fill from the bottom or top! I put 64 oz in mine... and just for the heck of it, I just went out and pulled the dipstick, and it was right on the line, maybe even a hair high.. I can respect your guy's knowledge.. and once again.. I retracted the info from TC Electronics...
