Re: How to get Wife and Kids Bums out of Bed.

Our fam is the opposite...I'll get up at 5am and do some fishing come home catch some Zs but the fam normally doesn't head out until sometime between 3-5pm to cool off and watch and the sun go down. Normally when we are headed out most people are headed in..

There's good water skiing and wake boarding at the end of the day too. But we also keep our boat in a slip so we don't have deal with the ramp crowd..

Why not have them meet you at the lake? It appeases everyone, and is probably worth the extra fuel in stress on one side or the other. That way, you get to follow your normal routine, you have the boat in the water warmed up, prepped and ready to go for when they get the sleep out of their eyes. Everybody's happy.

Thanks for the suggestion. I would rather just wait for them then spend more money on Fuel for two vehicles. Also our lakes have $6 per vehicle fee and $10 if your pulling a boat. I know this might sound like chump changes but it really adds up. I do have an annual pass for the tow vehicle and boat so that lessen the fees.

Maybe you're trying to boat during the wrong season. I've never lived in Arizona, but from what I understand it is just too hot to do anything outside in the summer months. Maybe your boating season should be spring and fall, instead of summer. That way you can go out at at an hour that is agreeable to everyone and it won't be too hot.

Re: How to get Wife and Kids Bums out of Bed.

I have a similar issue with a slight time shift. I like to be out around 7:30-8:00am. My wife and teenage daughters like to sleep to the crack of noon, or later

My morning rides are usually solo....I love the time out alone to read the paper, drink a thermos of coffee, scoot over to the restaurant across the lake for breakfast, clean the boat. I then check in later in the day and see if anyone is ready to join me. We do have the advantage that the marina is just a 5 minute drive from the house

Another issue is Mid day - when I am at the house and I ask if anyone wants to head out for a boat ride, I will get a lot of "yes, when do you want leave". Being slightly impatient, I always want to go in 15 minutes or less. My daughters are teenagers and they always need 90 minutes. Now I just text my wife and daughters and say, "I am heading out on the baot at this time. If you want to go...be ready. If you want to come later, text me and I will come back to the dock to pick you up." Of course as teenagers, texting is their preferred method of communication

We do boat some during spring and fall but the summer months from July thru Sept is the Hot months. I do not want to stop boating for those 3 months. My boating season is from Feb to mid Oct and during those hot months I want to get out there as early as possible.

I will compromise with the family. Anything to get out on the water.

OK I like getting out there early for several reasons. Heat, Perfect Sking Water, Less Boat Traffic.

Boating Solo Not an option.
New Wife and Family No way.

Be more Flexible and understanding, I will Try.

Do you understand that teens need MORE sleep to grow up healthy? Honestly - you're nuts if you think 5am is Ok to wake up a whole family to go skiing!

Most times that I'm going out, I tell people 11 am at the dock, they usually show up by noon and we go out till 4 or 5... learn how to ski in some waves :)

Ok come to AZ during the Month of July, Aug, Sept and tell me how nuts I am. You too will want to be out there early to beat the Heat. Its not only cooler and smoother water but Less boat traffic. We do not have them giant lakes like you may have.

Get them all off to bed a little earlier the night before, make breakfast and have it ready for them (with coffie if appropriate). If they wont get up after you have slaved in the kitchen, toss a good old guilt trip at them. If that don't work, leave the breakfast on the table and go solo. You can't force them to enjoy boating at 5am.

Re: How to get Wife and Kids Bums out of Bed.

you have an irresolvable conflict. You want to do some recreational boating, which is done during the day, but the waether conditions (you say) do not permit it. You're like a guy in Minnesota standing at the ramp in January complaining that he can't go tubing due to the ice. You simply have to find something else to do during those months other than boating.
Strange, though, if it's impossible to go during the day, where is all that boat traffic coming from, that you are complaining about?

The consensus here is solid: if your family does not want to go boat riding that early, you are being unreasonable to make them or complain about it. Your question is answered.

I can't understand the conflict you pose of "new wife" and "going solo." Sounds to me like they's be glad to get you out of the house.

No one is attacking you; everyone is disagreeing with you, and you seem to keep coming back hoping someone will agree or change his mind. T'aint happening.

Re: How to get Wife and Kids Bums out of Bed.

For what it is worth I grew up in a family of sailors, and Saturday was spent crusining, picnicing, swiming and having fun , etc... However Sunday's we raced. Yes I said raced. Small two man sailboats on a mudpuddle in Ohio, imagine the excitement.
Mom and Sister went to church and came to the lake in the afternoon but I was the "crew" and my father became Captian Bligh:(
From the age of about 8 until 16-17 I was forced to crew for him every Sunday from late April through early October. Good weather and bad, high winds and just drifting we would bob around that miserable puddle as he yelled and cursed about what I wasn't doing right, the damn wind, the other guy who stole our air, the motorboats that cut in front of us etc...
I finally escaped, and have never sailed with him again. I even got a motorboat just out of spite:)

What i'm saying is you can't make them do something they don't want to and expect long term happiness. Compromise a little and you'll all be better off.

Move chicken coop with roosters closer to house , Eat supper about 6pm ,Go to bed when chickens do. Start cooking early am first skillet with bacon second with potatoes , use bacon grease for eggs degrease them on plate with napkins . This works in Canada but I don't trailer the chickens with us . And they say you can't smell when your asleep but your stomach can ?

Re: How to get Wife and Kids Bums out of Bed.

While I agree with many posters that 5am is a bit aggressive, I also think most folks don't understand or appreciate the AZ summertime heat. I spent a lot of time there work there when I lived in socal. You learn tricks like walking on the painted stripes in parking lots when you're wearing leather soled shoes... so your feet don't get burned by the heat from the blacktop! It's crazy. At one point I was acclimated enough where it didn't seem too bad so long as the temp remained below 110. Not sure I would have gone boating during the day though. So in that context, I understand. It doesn't sound like your family is on the same page though.

Can they sleep in the car/truck for a bit? Sadly, teens are more likely to enjoy something, aka get motivated, if they have a friend along (vs. mom/dad)

Re: How to get Wife and Kids Bums out of Bed.

As you all pointed out getting them up at 5:00am is too much to expect. They love boating so there is no question that they want to go. Do they love it as much as I do. Maybe not. I'm trying to beat the Heat and the blare of the sun. We are all Fair skin and light color hair. Lets just say we need to take stock in Sun Tan Lotion.

Someone mentioned new wife something like that. My wife and I have been Married 21 years and my boys are 8 13 and 16. I grew up around boating when I was little and my dad use to get us kids up early as well. I remember sleeping in the truck on the way to the lake. This was in Northern CA. We would get up at the crack of Dawn and go fishing and sking later in the day. Im not into fishing anymore though. Im trying to instill those memories now with my family.

I will cut them a break and try to get them out the door by 7:00am. If they complain that its too hot then I will learn to boat solo during the hot months.

Thanks for reading my Story. I guess no one else has the same battles trying to get the family out the door early in the morning.
