How to part out a motor -- hidden gems?

Hi all,

I've acquired a nonrunning 1970 Evinrude 85 V4 electric shift with a new boat. There's no spark, and compression (measured cold) is poor in 1 cylinder: 125, 120, 110, 95. After having read many suggestions on these forums along the lines of "don't sink any $$ into one of these electric shift motors", I haven't spent any time trying to diagnose the spark issue.

So, I'm looking to part it out. I know the LU parts are tough to find for these motors, the amplifier looks new (tests out OK), and the starter is in good shape. T/t has blown motor.

Any other parts that might be especially in demand? Pistons in the good cylinders?

Thanks

The list prices of the available individual parts and assemblies are in the public domain, which should also give you some idea of which are scarce or unavailable: http://shop.evinrude.com/

That power head is probably not too bad and the low cylinders just may have carbon build up.

You could probably split the lower unit from the power head.....

It's the season where people will need parts......

The prop too.....

ebay is a good place to part it out

That TnT unit, even broken, is worth pretty good $$$$

Why part it out? Why not run it?:confused:

Does not currently run (no spark), lacks proper controls, some pieces missing (e.g., slow speed adjust dial linkage), unknown LU status. This type of motor appears to be difficult to find parts for.

Keep motor: likely put >$100 and a bunch of hrs. into making it go. Gamble: repair costs could be much more than that. Even if repairs are reasonable, I'm proud owner of a type of motor notorious enough to show up in several "Top 10 worst motors" lists.

Part motor out: hope to make enough back that, when I add the >$100 I would have put into making it go, I'm getting close to the price of a running motor of similar hp with manual shift & easier parts access. Gamble: might fetch less than I think and have ruined any chance of using the motor.

The second is a gamble I'm willing to take, especially given that I have another working motor, and can sit and wait for motivated buyers.

I'd rig up a switch to test out the lower unit shifting (power on no wires = fwd, one of the wires (can't remember blue or green ..) = neutral, both = reverse) so that I could sell the entire lower unit as working. You can spin the starter to shift it, since it needs the oil pump in the lower unit to shift.
A working ignition system would be worth something also.... I'd try to make some effort (but little or no $$) to get it running and do a YouTube video so I could sell the parts for more $$. It could be a case when 20 bucks and a few hours of time could make you 500 bucks on the parts resale.
