I have a foot off a small Merc. Could be anywhere from 6 to 10 HP. The foot is destroyed but the gears are good. I removed the drive shaft and the shift rod then got all the gears out except the forward gear which is in the back of the foot. I have tried everything to remove it but no go. It turns freely but just will not come out. Any tricks on this? Thanks

Try a slide hammer. Hook it in the gear, and slidehammer it out. And it the lower foot is junk, then you can cut it away to get to the gear.

lifes great, Your forward gear has a bearing pressed onto it.In turn the bearing/gear is pressed into the nose of the housing.
Try heating the nose some with a propane torch, then 'hit' the gearcase against your bench (prop shaft/skeg side down).Usually the gear pops out with the bearing.Look out for the shims.
DHP
