Hrm, well you could be right joe. I recall they seat a good inch or better in the water pump housing. Wouldn't be the first time my memory failed me.

All that being said, it's just copper tubing. No reason you couldn't cut and solder in a new bottom section - if there's room enough to get it done.

Just go to the BRP site, or ishopmarine.com and you can bring up the diagrams for that and any other section you need.
