How to? Remove name painted on the sides

I heard it's bad luck to change the name on a boat, and Yes, I may be a bit redneck, but apparently not redneck enough to leave "Stumpbuster 2" painted on the sides of my boat,,,lol,,, So, I'm looking for the easiest way to remove it, with the least bit of damage, or work, thanks.

By the way, I tried some plain old white polishing compound, and it did seem take a little off, after quite a bit of work.

Mik, You may use some marine paint remover, if you are sure the name is paint over gel coat. If it is paint over paint, stick with fine samdpaper or polishing compound.

If you are supersticious (spelling?) there is a ritual for renaming the boat. It involves drinking champagne and pouring some into the water to appease Posidion, and some other "Gods" of the ocean.

Re: How to? Remove name painted on the sides

Thanks Chris for the tips, Also, maybe if I don't rename it, it won't be a problem,,,lol,,, It appears to be paint over the Gel Coat, I don't particularly care to use paint remover in any form, if possible? I was just wondering if the Dupont brown rubbing compound might work, without a lot of effort, that is if I can find it somewhere? Or, if someone here know's of a more readily available Marine version of something like it, that would work as well, or better?

Try soaking newspaper or paper towels in paint thinner and paisting it over the letters.

Make sure it is paint over the gel coat and use easy off oven cleaner.
just spray it on let it set and wipe it off.
will take the paint off and not hurt the gel coat.
worked on my semi that had graphics painted on it.

I heard from an oldtimer that giving your boat a coat of lime furniture polish {ex: pledge} will keep it looking brand new

His boat was 15 years old, and i must admit you'd never know it. Any of you guys heard of this.

I'd try rubbing compound to get the lettering off followed by less harsh compounds to get the scratches from the rubbing compound out. You may end up with a shiny area where the letters were brighter than the rest of the hull.

I wonder what became of 'ol Stumpbuster I? :p

I must have been spaced out when I wrote the name, it's "Stumpjumper 2", just goes to show you how much I dislike it! either way, Yes, I wonder what happened to ol "Stumpjumper 1"?,,, lol,,, Anyway, tried the brown heavy duty rubbing compound, didn't do much more then the white polishing compound :( I also tried Nail polish remover which has laquer thinner in it, did nothing. I doubt paint thinner on paper towels would work, if laquer thinner didn't phase it? but who know's, I need to get some to try. I also might try oven cleaner, if the paint thinner don't work, It seems logical, I've seen that stuff in action, I hope it won't damage the Gel cioat though? Thanks All for the tips, I'll let you know if any of these work.

First off, make sure it's paint. Many boat names are decals and can be removed with a hair dryer and razor blade ...

It's paint, three color layers to match the boat, white lettering with blue and red outlining, decals, or vinyl lettering would have been way easier to remove,,, it figures. I'll be back at it tomorrow.

Sanded mine off... then 3M rubbing compound to remove sanding scratches followed up with finesse-it II and a good sealer.

If the gel coat shows a different shade then you'll have to blend it by sanding and buffiing. It's all in what you see I guess. The most you will likely have is a shiny spot where the graphics used to be. Buffit good!

I had thought of using wet sandpaper, but not sure of what number grit? I know that on a car, 400, or 600 wet, is used after a primer, then just spray your finish coat, and I know that sometimes you use an even finer grit (not sure which one?) to get rid of "orange peel" on the final coat, then compound, and polish, or wax.

Re: How to? Remove name painted on the sides

the easy off idea is the best, but it will depend on the age of the lettering. The older it is,the longer it will have to soak to be effective.
i've been in the auto body trade for 40 years, and only once or twice have seen easy off Not work!! But,buy easy off brand name,I did try a cheapo oven cleaner once, and it had almost no effect on the lettering.

2 things to add: 1) Nail Polish Remover is primarily acetone, not laquer thinner and 2) Unless you are block sanding with the various compounds you are trying, you are affecting both surfaces equally (gel coat and lettering). Try some real laquer thinner on the tip of a rag. Unless it's catalyzed paint it should cut it...

Re: How to? Remove name painted on the sides

Tried the paint thinner idea, no luck,,, And the winners are,,, woosterken, & dingr, the easy off worked in a flash! but, did leave the the outline of the numbers darker, and the Gel coat a bit dull, & paler looking around it, not sure exactly how to bring it back (easily?) but it is somewhat of a relief!

Re: How to? Remove name painted on the sides

Glad we helped!! One more idea, before buffing,I like a little wet sanding with 1500 grit on a sanding block.[gives you a headstart on the polishing with a fresh even surface to work on]
