Does anyone know how to repair a broken skegg without sending the skegg out to be repaired?

Thanks

Is there any part of the skeg left? If enough is there, you can buy replacement skegs that bolt on. If not, you are looking at getting a new one welded on. What type of outdrive are we talking about?

as stated above... get a skeg guard or take it to a shop to be repaired..... there isn't much left of it so your only option for at home repair is the skeg guard or another like it that attaches with two bolts at the top.... not enough left to glue too

Just my opinion.......... I would get a replacement welded on since you really do not have much left to bolt a skeggard to.

I would not risk it and a welded one is probably your best bet for a repair

its only eight bolts and a gasket.

Re: How to repair a broken skegg

nope not what I'd call difficult... take the whole boat to a welding shop or a prop shop... they cut and grind off the old one and weld on a new one

if that isn't an option then drain the oil out of the outdrive by removing the drain and fill screws, trim the drive all the way up put it in forward gear, remove the trim tab with an allen through the hole directly above it... remove the bolt hidden by the trim tab, two nuts above the prop, two nuts near the front on either side (these will bind against the upper and you will have to remove the rest and separate the lower about 1/2" to get these off), and one more at the very front. the lower unit should now be free and ready to come off... put a new impeller in before you replace the lower...
takes me less than 10 minutes

i would just pull the whole drive unless i was intending to change the impeller. its harder and more costly to pull the lower than the drive itself

me too but then not just anyone can heft it up and get it installed without a hoist.... honestly I bet that if it were mine I'd be pulling both and doing an impeller plus some bellows.... not a bad idea to check/adjust engine alignment too.

LOL you missed my point..... I can do it while ordering pizza on the cell and but it can be a bit tough for some folks who don't share my 6'4" 240 lb stature lol...... Anyhow either way works and your way is less messy but many shops can do the job with it still on the boat..... at least worth a phone call

Buy a new lower unit. By the time someone tries to weld that back on so close to the lower shaft seals they'll melt. You'll end up in there anyway and I can't help but wonder if your lower unit got hit hard enough to take the skeg off like that if it's any good in the first place. JMHO.

Nope, if they are halfways carfull it won't melt anything, keep the oil in it and just crack a drain plug to let air out, the oil and the mass of aluminum will absorb the heat, as long as they don't go at it in one session, that is one nasty skeg though.

You may want to change waters or something, lowers do not like shocks, it cracks the gears and they will fail at some point .

Ayuh,.... Just Run it,...

The skeg only helps alittle bit in protecting the prop anyways...

My buddy says the samething...Just run it.I can buy a new skegg with all the guts for 650.00,but the marina can take it apart and send it in for 350.00.This doesn't include labour.I have hit anything myself with the boat, thats the way I bought it.Being a Newby to boats sucks, now i'm into repairs.A whole new stern drive is 1200.00.Doesnt the skegg help with stering?
