Doesnt the skegg help with stering?
Yep and protects the prop also. Just take it off and take it to a prop shop and have a new one installed (about $125-$150). While its off go ahead and replace the impeller and have prop checked.

Ayuh,... In extremely limited circumstances, ya,...
But believe me, you'll never miss it,...
It's generally the prop thrust that steers the boat...

Tempman... by looking at your wording, I think you may have misunderstood what the skeg actually is.... It is ONLY the fin.... the part you describe as having "guts" is the lower unit housing. the original skeg is cast as one piece with it but a prop shop or welding shop can EASILY cut it off and weld on a new one.... the prop shop will have them in stock but you'll need to source your own (under $100) for the welding shop... Worst case scenario this shouldn't cost more than $200

FWIW I ran a lower for years that came to me with a skeg guard on it.... One day I was just curious and I pulled it off to look at the skeg.... Mine was every bit as nasty as yours and I never had any issue at all... I put the skeg guard back on and continued to run it till I sold the boat.

OR as bondo said run it... it doesn't do much....The effect on steering is VERY minimal and while it will save a prop on a concrete boat ramp it won't do squat to save you from rocks and stumps and logs.

I used this one, because i could drive and go get it. Mine was not quite as bad as yours. My replacement has been on for a year and i have knocked the crud out of it a couple times and its still going strong. I agree that you can go without one but I would hit my prop quite a bit without it. These Texas lakes are pretty low. Installs in 15 min, drill two holes.
Good luck!

I had mine welded, twice, this is how it looked the last time before welding, no seals leaking. I dropped lower unit and took to a local prop shop for repair.

Now it looks like this.

Get it fixed, that is my thought. No you do not have to, it just looks better.

tempman, your pic didn't work but any guard like the one joe posted will work.... you just want to make sure there are two bolts at the top so there will be enough of your old skeg to bolt too....
