how to seal prop case??

picked up a 70's chrysler 55hp outboard and had to replace the mid shift rod. it was also leaking white oil meaning water was getting into the case. how do i seal that puppy? can i use some sort of gasket sealer or silicone? if so what brand.

If it is the single carb 55, that has a split lower unit. The original seals are sufficient. You would need to buy a drive shaft seal, prop shaft seal, fill and vent seals, shift rod seal, and gearcase to upper casting seal. Before going through the bother, pressurize the gearcase and check for the leak then replace only that seal. You may get lucky and find only fill and vent seals need replacing.
