Re: How to set Carb for 140hp

If you were looking for extra horsepower by putting the 140 carbs on, it's not going to work. Your 1986 115 is already putting out 140 horsepower, as rated pre 1985. In 1985 they re-rated all outboards to be propshaft rated, vs. powerhead rated as they were done previously. That means that the 1985 & up 115 horse crossflow was the identical engine to the 1984 & prior 140hp crossflow.

In other words, if your 140 carbs are freshly rebuilt you don't need to do a thing to put them on your 115 (assuming the 140 carbs are primer system carbs and not the older choke system carbs).

Would they make a difference on a 1980 115hp?

I've wondered this myself as that is what I have. If I picked up a set of 140 carbs would I get something more than 115 out of the motor?

Just curious as I want to break 40 mph and get about 39 now. That one extra mph is bugging me.

I thought that the loopers hit in 1984/5 ish ???
Please correct me if I am wrong though.

Yes, the looper 120/140 came out in 1985. The 1985 looper 140 is a MUCH stronger motor than the crossflow 140 it replaced in the line-up...

As for the 1980 115, it may already have something close to the 140 carbs. The big difference between the 115 and 140 CF motors was the exhaust tuning. They shared the same block porting...

Check the year on that 115 crossflow. They don't show a 115 in 1986. Also, check the throat sizes on both sets of carbs. The front flange face of the carb has the throat size cast into it. Either 1 3/8" or 1 5/16". The 1 3/8" carbs will flow more fuel/air. The older 140 crossflows had high compression heads and intake filler blocks-which the later 115 bubble back crossflows did not have.
