The motor I am trying to buy (70 HP Johnson seahorse not sure what year looks like late 70's early 80's)is not mounted to a boat. It is just in a shed. How would I start it without controls. Would a 12V battery and a gas can be enough. I know I would have to have muffs to put over the intake but would this be sufficient for checking the motor. I know I need to check compression. All I have to do for that is get a compression checker and take the plugs out and turn it over a few times in each hole and it should give me a reading right? I was told that it hasnt been run in about 6 months and the carbs looke like they needed to be cleaned. Could I spray some carc cleaner in there and try it or would that hurt the motor. I know these are very high performance machines and need to be taken well care of so i dont want to ruin when i try ir out. If you need more info on the motor i will try and get it to you. Any info you can give me on checking a motor would be useful.

i don't know enough about the motor. some had battery cables that went directly to the motor, and not thru the wiring harness. those you could jump the soleniod. and would have to choke to kill. i don't think this is one.

I belive you are right. I dont think the screw driver approach will work with this one. I think that it has the red wiring harness that plugs together. I wish that it wasnt 2 and a half hours away or I would go look. Assuming that it does have the wiring harness, is there any way to start it without controls

Battery cables, ground to ground on the block. Red to battery side of solenoid with motor side of harness positive leads there too. Jump the solenoid.

Thanks walker I will try that.

maybe a while b-4 I do. I will have to make that drive all the way down there to do it and still have to take the old mercury and tilt/trim off the boat.
