Hi guys. I have a 1975 johnson 70 outboard and am being told that this motor does not come with a tell tail tube for the water pump. I keep the boat in a slip so how do i know if it is pumping so i do not wreck the motor. I know some have a warning buzzer but im sure this is a transplant motor so its long gone even if it had one. Anyone have any ideas.

After the engine warms up there should be a fine mist of water coming out of the exhaust ports on rear of leg; also you should be able to put you finger on the head for a count of at least two. Iv'e also see some mechanic put drops of water on the heads, if not overheating the drops just stay there if not they boil and dry up fast. Good luck

I have seen elsewhere on this forum that the water coming out of the exhaust port should be about 140 degrees.

The only problem i have is you have to stop hang over the stern or pull off the cowl. There has got to be a better way

I assume the slip has a dock? Get up on the dock & look? How about turn the engine then look for the mist? (Not trying to be a wise guy)

I was not trying to be a smart a??? Either so sorry if it cam across that way. What i ment is it is easy to check at the dock but what about while your out running down the bay. I also have a merc and while i runing i can do a quick turaround and see the tell tale tube and know its good or not

Another option would be to search this forum on how to add a tell-tale and then do it.

Did not know that was even possible. Bear with me a little longer but how do you search the forumn for a specfic topic. I have tried before on other topics with no luck at all

I have the same engine, it takes awhile to warm up! then the mist is small. you can buy a laser heat reader at your local hobby shop, just point at the spot you want to read for about 39.00. I use it on cars and boats.

There is some good information on this forum about adding a tell tale to the older motors. Ill see if I can find the link and post it on here.

Thanks thats exactly what i was looking for and i think i decided to put it at the top of the exhaust cover but does anyone know if there is an exact spot you have to drill to hit the water jacket or can it be anywhere on the cover plate. The details are a little vague to me and im a little nervous about drilling into my motor.

Thanks i saw that but it is for a later model 70. Would they be the same. Meaning is a 1975 the same as a newer year 70

Re: how to tell if im pumping water thru my engine

OK, now I have a question. My tell tale is pouring water great. My port side head, '88 175 Johnson, is comfortably warm at idle on muff and hose. My other side is uncomfortably warm after a few seconds. Just how warm should these be? Laser thermometers are pretty cheap these days, but if you don't know an acceptable range, won't do much good. I'm changing the water pump after vacation. water is pouring out of the weep hole in the front of the gearcase and around the pivot hinges. That can't be good. I'm pumping a boatload of water. Pun intended:facepalm:
