How to test coils on 1968 Evinrude 40HP?

The German coils seem to be pretty good quality. Personally, when I ohm test them, I really don't pay much attention to the actual reading. As long as they have continuity of a "few" k-ohms and are not cracked, leaking, or otherwise damaged, I feel ok to use them.

Thank you for all the info.

I ordered 2 new coils from Boats.net.
Looks like they shipped already .
$50.75 total.

If motor runs - it will be worth it...

It will be all new ignition - new coils, wires, points, condensers ,plug cap and plugs. Should get a spark I think!
And I will keep old ones just in case.

I will post the results.

You'll get such a good spark Frankenstein will be on your doorstop wanting to charge his electrodes ha ha. Don't forget what F_R said about cleaning even new points - he knows his stuff.

Too bad you didn't order from iBoats....you'd have saved some $$$, and supported these forums.

Got the coils.

They both showed 4.7 at 20K setting.

With new coils engine fired up with half of the turn.

Ignition problem is solved, but I hit a new one:

After very short time running the water started coming out from top exhaust hole as I expected and I ran for 5-10 mins wating to heat up to do carburator tune up.
Then suddenly water stopped running from top exhaust.
I got my remote themometer worring about overheat and had to shut the engine when it got to 200F.

With whole new water pump kit and all new gaskets, seals and grommets it was a shocker...
Never had such problem, so far....
What could happened to it?

PS: I also noticed later very tiny leak of brown oily exhaust from under the nut that holds the elbow of the heat exchanger.

Does anybody know if there is a way to tight up?

Tnx.

That's great about the spark situation - Thinking of the new coils ... were they omc, sierra or cdi or what (just curious)?

Thinking of the overheating ... have you tried removing the thermostat (and that funny little yellow ball thing that the thermostat sits on)?

Sorry, I have no idea whether or not that nut tightens ... I've never had one leak.

The thermostat and funny ball thing must be installed for proper cooling.

coils were sierra.

Thermostat was dead.

Still decided to check water pump because of worry about water not coming out from top exhaust hole.

Seems like it will take a while to put it on a water , but at least it is running now...

I am puzzled now....
Impeller looked fine, but I replaced it again just in case.
Tubes looked fine, no obstructions.

What I did - I took out thermostat\valve assembly and left it open while running engine.
No water came out at all.

I do not understand : when I started this engine for the very first time it pumped water from exhaust as it is supposed to for a few minutes and then it stopped.
This means that first impeller worked fine and no obstructions was in the system.
I am not sure why it does not do it anymore.

Does anybody have any ideas?
What and how can I check?

Tnx.

Are you sure you twisted the impellor into the housing in the right direction? I had one that had one of the wings bent the wrong way and the motor ran hot.
