Not necessarily, no. Most switches I see around have a make-before-break design that allows you to switch from one to both to the other (BUT *NOT* OFF!) with the engines running and no ill consequences. Not all switches are this way, mind you, and most of them will say on the switch whether it is necessary to turn engines off. Mine's a Perko that does indeed allow switching while running (which is a necessary thing in my case, more often than not).

matttt my thoughts are; i just spent the last several minutes looking over thomv's expl and i think he gives great advice. the only thing i would add (not an expert either but had a job in auto/starting/charging systems) would be that its ok to use 'both' posit. when running. if using batts of diff age only, it would apply. the older more sulfated batts will need a longer time to charge, and they will get the boost they need even tho their internal v may be lower, as they will be taking on a higher current. but i'm in the 'inland freshwater, infrequent use' type situation, and don't have to worry about specific v most of the time.

like was said earlier, just think of your batteries, keep them charged, ck them out just as you would ck the bearings on your trailer or the oil resrv... i hope that helps :)
