Re: how to wire this switch

Could probably guess at it, but with a switch part number, and the name of the switch manufacturer the wiring diagram may be available?

The only thing for certain about that switch is the two terminals with the brass bar connecting them is the +12 volt input to the switch.
Like Don says, we could guess at the rest but I'm not willing to do that. Check the switch manufacturer web site for pin-outs.

Lynnboy:

I found this link on the Carling Switch site . . . it might have what you need. If not there are a few more model series in that same location that you could check out.

http://www.carlingtech.com/sites/de...Series - Standard Switch Circuit Diagrams.pdf

It looks like there are several types of switches with that many pin-outs. So, you will still have to find the 'type' of switch to get a match.

Carling makes switchs for several companies and to their specifications.
Who packaged the switch you have? Cole Hersey? BlueSea? Sierra? SeaDog? Seasense?

And what was the part number you ordered.

Re: how to wire this switch

From the actual rear view picture of this switch I can say that it IS a double pole switch. However, we can't tell if it is a single throw or double throw or momentary or even a three position type. As stated before the terminals with the bar across the two terminals are common or shorted together. That could be either a common ground or common positive terminals. I will state that your new wiring layout is far superior to the old wiring. You must be a technician with some experience for that setup. If you are, then you can take an ohm meter and ohm out this switch and tell if it is DPST, or DPDT (Double Pole Double Throw). That meaning you have two circuits operated via one front button. Once you know the type of switch, then you can make a schematic diagram to allow your hookup you want. The two terminals strapped together are most likely for the light option in the switch.

Re: how to wire this switch

Looking at the back of the switch the pins are numbered 1,2,3,4 on the left side and 5,6,7,8 on the right.
Pins 2 and 6 are connected together with the brass strip. That is +12 volts into the switch. It is NOT related to the internal light.
Pin #7 is the ground connection for the internal light. Pin #8 is the backlight supply IN.
Pins 1 gets powered when the switch is likely in the DOWN position and pin 3 is powered when the switch is in the UP position. Same for pins 5 and 7 on the other side of the switch. That switch will be wired like this for NAVANC lights. You will wire the internal light circuit for the gauges to the same terminal that feeds the bow light. There is no need to have the gauges lit up when the switch is in the ANC position. Consider the terminals on this switch to be 1,2,3 on the left and 5,6,7, on the left Pins 7 and 8 on your switch wee described above.

Re: how to wire this switch

Here is Silvertips drawing and how it would look on your switch the way you have the switch mounted in the panel.
7 and 8 go to ground for the lights on the switch.
2 and 5 are the terminals coming from the circuit breaker.

Re: how to wire this switch

You have to have the jumper from terminal 1 to 3 for them to work together in one position.

Re: how to wire this switch

As long as it works, go for it. I was just guessing at the wiring really, since there is nothing in the Carling information about that switch model number, and their diagrams make little sense and none show terminals 7 and 8.
