A little low, but both readings are the same - that's good. You may want to do a decarb with Seafoam. That will usually bring the compression up somewhat. I had a 5.5hp that was running about 60 - the decarb brought it up to about 75.

Congrats on your new motor, I've had several of these over the years and I love em. 60 is on the low side, but I too have had older omc motors that ran fine on 60 so give it a whirl. as far as problems, well the plastic gas gauge cracks easy and is prone to leaking and distortion from over tightening. The tiller should unscrew to a screw driver, there should be a spark plug wrench and a rubber pin holder. The leather gas strap can be dry and cracked. You'll probably need to clean the carb, possibly replace the impellers, yes there are 2 of them, and they look like a wiggly 3 legged spider. Hopefully the previous owner did not try to restore it and paint it silver or some other color. I think these motors look better aged. Go to the aomci.org site, it the antique outboard motor club and there you find tons of other guys who love old outboards.

have fun and good luck.

That's a 1940 model. I have the later parts manual, the '41-'46 manual for the 3.3hp if you think it's close enough you might be interested. PM with email address me if so.

If your compression numbers don't come up after a Seafoam treatment, it may not idle well...should run okay otherwise, maybe a little weak on the top end. Those are nice motors, easy to keep and run...kinda bulky for the hp produced though.
Gotta ask samo about the boat/motor in his avatar. Can you post a larger pix samo?

I think the compression will come up as it was bone dry when I tested it.
I like the fact that it takes the same plugs as my Snow Cruisers.
Here's a picture of it
