Re: hull extension in progress with picks
Re: hull extension in progress with picks
the only reason i used regular ext plywood on my deck is because my framers cut up all the ply wood i had drying for months.......in a glass boat, pt wood is the way i would go all the way.
all the under side of the deck on my boat is pt encapsulated in glass.
the reason the site said not to is because pt is wet when you get it.....it needs to be dryed for a long time or it wont take resin properly.....
the other factor is that when pt drys ....it warps.....so you run into a catch 22 situation.....but if it is dryed for a long time flat....it is one of the best deck woods out there.....it can sit in water for 40 years without rotting.....once encapsulated in glass....double that life span....
i have read on this site that 4x4 pt posts rot at the surface contact area (the point between above ground and below ground) in a few years....thus negating the benefits of the treating.....but what is not factored in, is the microbial life forms that are at the surface of the dirt eating the wood.
but, in a boat its different. real surface dirt and life forms are not as much as an issue.
as far as ext grade........ its just below marine.....and lots cheaper......there is more voids between the plys.....it has less plys than marine.......and a slightly different glue than marine.....it also needs to be dryed....at least a week !
BUT..........once encapsulated in glass....it will last 20 years with regular care....more if great care is taken.......the exact same time period as marine ply.....once the marine ply is infected with rot.....it will take slightly longer than regular ext ply to collapse....but not much.....
so .....imho.....if the budget is tight and the time factor is also tight.....use ext grade ply.
boats are a trade off.....use this....and you loose this......
in a glass boat where there is no aluminium.....i highly suggest pt ply....if you have the time to dry it properly.....if you dont....then go ext ply......imho....marine ply does not give the benifits vs cost......
the difference being 6 months over 20 years !
wow.....was i on a rant?

...please forgive me......
but imho.....thats the difference between the different basic choices of ply wood.
im gonna get killed by the members now.......
i hope that helps
cheers
