Hull paint peeling

I just purchased a Lowe FM165 in March. I just took the boat to get the breakin oil changed and noticed paint peeling at the V part of the hull. The service people told me they had several boat last year, that had to be returned for painting. The bright side is, Lowe will repaint the boat after the seasons over with. Anyone had this problem corrected and how is the paint job holding up?

The problem was in the primer. We have had three repainted and have had no problems with them since.

My dealer told me that Lowe switched primer suppliers 2 years ago.

Did this happen on a 2007 or newer?

It kind of has me worried.

You should be OK DeepV, I believe the problem year was the early 06's? So far so good with my 06, I check frequently!

I purchased a 2008 175 Fish and Ski this Spring and approximately 1/4 of the paint has peeled off the bottom. I have been told that it will need to go back for repaint this Winter.

My dealer is about a 2 hour drive one way so that will use up some gas for me to get it to them.

I wonder if they do a complete re-paint or just patch the bad spots?

I am surprised to hear that, I thought they would have corrected that problem by now?
From the people I have talked about with similar issues, they said the whole boat was repainted, just make sure you ask first. Good Luck.........Irv964

P.S. I would also inquire about some sort of reimbursement for your gas and troubles, it is not your fault the paint is peeling.

I just discovered the exact same problem with my 2007 FS 165. I took it out last weekend and hit some soft junk, maybe lily pad roots or rotten stump, wasn't very hard, while at idle in a channel. On the trailer we noticed that the paint peeled righ off the keel. I love this boat but all the nickle and dime stuff is getting to me.

Here's a list of problems I've had:
-Prop ventilation on turns
-gas breather hose vents into bilge, smells up the rod locker storage.
-DC power outlet shorts out and keeps blowing fuses.
-Another short somewhere that drains the starter battery
-Stern navigation light broke off the electrical contacts
-bilge was filled with metal shavings, used welding rods, and rubish
-rod storage locker door flimsy, bends when you step on it
-The glove box door on the passenger console rattles (weather stripping solved that)
-Peeling paint

Anyone else have these problems?

Oh yeah the peeling paint, I'm going to wait until fall to talk to the dealer about it. So much boating left, so little time.

I'm disapointed with this problem but I'm glad that I'm not the only one. I don't know how they would fix it with out stripping all the Paint and re-painting it, where would it end?

I own a 07 stinger 175 (the one that had the drain problems) Anyway talked to Lowe about the paint issue during the phone calls about the drains.

They stated that problem was confined to 06 and was a primer problem. Said all problem boats were returned to Lowe and totally repainted.

I do not have paint issues yet but DO have electrical problems now. I'm beginning to wonder what the hell I was thinking when I made the deal. To make matters worse the dealer is no longer a lowe agent and no other Lowe dealer within 100 miles will touch it since they made no money on the deal.

To correct the drain problem had to pay out of my pocket to a boat service and am still waiting for a check from Lowe.

Also I would not put off making a claim about the paint and get it in writing.

Lowe Boats is owned by Brunswick Marine and they are having problems same as everyone with the economy

Brunswick announced some weeks ago that they were eliminating some brands and closing plants-slowing production with the ones that survive. They closed Hatteras Yachts here in NC last week. Brand had been around for ever.

At least if you have a claim you become a creditor to Lowe same as any company-supplier etc. and it will stand up in court if they should go away.

Note that is BIG if but anything is possible with this economy

I have had a few, namely 2 cracked dashes. First was the passenger side, it cracked from the grab handle down and then this year after winter storage I noticed my drivers side had cracked on the outside from the windsheild down towards the front of the boat. 1st one was fixed under warranty and so will the second one after this summer. I was told the fasteners are too tight for our cold Canadian winters and this causes the cracking?
I had also large amounts of metal shavings through out the boat, all over the carpeting, in the bildge etc. I wrote Lowe and asked them about this but never got any feed back about it?
My glove box rattled too, put little rubber bumpers in the gaps and cured it.
My middle storage box I find weak too.(may reinforce soon?)
The prop ventilation I don't think is a related problem for Lowe, I beleive it is more a problem of the prop that is installed at the dealer?
And so far so good as far as peeling paint goes. I know my dealer is pretty frustrated with all the boats they have had to repaint!........Irv964

You make a good point, I'm going to photograph the entire boat (wish I had earlier now) and document the peeling paint, then get on the horn with the dealer. If they insist on bringing it in now they'll just have to give me a loaner boat.

I've had no problems with the windsheild, other than getting it wet. Cold winters sounds like a BS excuse. This past winter we had a record winter for snow falls, and when it wasn't snowing it was below 0 degs F, with some lows coming close to neg 30 F. I even stored the boat out side (never again!) with a tarp and cover, and yes, guilty of letting snow pile up on it. I've had no problems. I know the windsheild is made thrid party.

Just bought a 2009 Stinger160 and guess what... the paint is peeling...called lowe and they said they were aware of the problem and would repaint the bottom section...i asked if the paint was the same on the topside and they said yes but could not paint the topside because of the carpeting and plastic..I was floored!!...repainting half the boat when i paid for oven baked paint on the whole boat is unaccepable..My boat has 10 hours running time and it looks like s#it..I know that most of you are content with a re-paint but not me...I have no mercy for people who do things like this and will only settle for a new boat or my money back....Lowe said Brunwick said they are not permitted to replace the defective boats... only repair them...My calls will start tomorrow to lowe and Brunswick and if i get bad news then my attorney will take it from there.. no excuses ..they knew of this problem for almost 4 years..

Lets us know how it works out. I have minor peeling on the keel but I am concerned that this is still and issue on a new boat.

Hey Overload... beleive me thats where it starts...paint peeled off the keel the first time out then it gets worse from there...call the factory..paint on top side is the same paint used on the bottom.. so if they paint only the bottom then how does that take care of the problem..

Many lowe owners are having this problem.Its unfortunate that LOWE doesn't care enough to correct issues.I had 2007 FS165 with same problems.Emailed and called factory direct.Ended up selling boat after 2nd year too many problems no confidence.Empty and full rivet shells thruout boat,metal filings in my opinion beyond acceptable levels,cracking dashes, wood screws exposed,look in compartments and under gunnells,factory now covers them with rubber plugs,paint peeling in 2'x2' flakes when boat only spends 1 week in water and rest stored indoors.Boat was painted after 1st year,read warranty factory advised lucky that they are painting and wanted to charge for decal kit because warranty states that paint is not covered and they are repainting boats 1 time under goodwill jesture. Factory says problem in primer and boats were drying between primer coats so if you got a boat near the end of paint process and primer dried you will have this problem.Canadian buyers are at worst because once boat crosses over border they repaint them locally at bodyshops and the baking process not the same.A key selling feature of salesman is there paint process and is not repeated on repaired boats,really is that legal if they are correcting consumers complaints.

Sad to hear of these problems, In 2006 I bought a 170 Lowe stinger. From the start it was a very rough ride, dealer moved motor up / down & final said that is the way it is. I called Lowe, they said some need small trim tabs on the back & sent a set to both myself & the dealer. Lowe could not understand why the dealer wasted his time moving motor up / down & did not call for factory support.
Two years latter a welded seems cracked, dealer suggested getting it repaired localy. Because the freight to & from Lowe would be more than repair cost. Did not sound like the best option given Lowe have life time hull warrantly, so again I called them directly. They even had record of my first call about rough ride, told me frieght is inculed in warranty. From there they looked after everything & in the end I recieved a NEW 2009 boat. [I live in Ontario Canada, did not cost me a nickel].
Yes, I had extreme frustration with NEW Lowe boat. But appears it has been a dealer issue, all of my calls to Lowe have ended in excellent responce / result. I have talked with some other Lowe owners that said their dealer was excellent & they did the phoning to Lowe and resolved issues. One even had the axel replaced on his trailer because tires wore uneven.

Bought a new FM175DC in March of '08.
After first run noticed the keel was peeling. Cabelas contacted Lowe factory and apperantly had 11 others sold that year that were returned at end of year. No problem with Lowe factory repainting and covering $$$. Free winter storage for the year.
After getting boat back in spring of '09, after my first run, I noticed the bottom of the boat was now peeling (worse than just the keel). Just brought it back in to be returned to Lowe factory (yet again) for another fresh paint job. Cabelas (excellent service dept.) has taken care of this for me and assured me Lowe will continue to re-paint (and re-stripe) until problem is solved.
Hey, a fresh paint job, free winter storage, and new stickers each year. Looks new every year but is a hassle. Other than the paint problem (which only shows underneath when cleanining/waxing), I LOVE THIS BOAT.
Mated with a Merc. 115 Optimax, she flies (48-52 mph).
Perfect family boat. Great for all fishing and skiing/tubing.

I bought a Lowe FM165 in June of 08 and by July 4th had no paint left on the bottom. Glad I'M not the only one with this problem. But here's the thing,I took it in had it sent to factory and was repainted. The whole boat cause I got it back with no registration numbers and the damage was on the bottom. July 5th of 09 I took it to the car wash to wash it and as I was going about it i caught the paint starting to peel again. Yes for a second time! I caught it before it got out of control(a spot about the size of a quarter)but none the less the problem wasn't taken care of and now once again my boat is at the factory again. It is nice to have a new paint job every year but just want the worry to end. It is taking longer to gat it back this time so maybe they are getting it right this time.

Waiting to get my FM175 back from factory (or Cabelas). I will take her on a couple of test runs before first big fishing trip in May just to check the quality of this years re-pain & re-sticker job. Just anxious to get her wet again to kick off the new season. Cabelas has backed me 100% and taken care of all issues (in dealing with this B.S.) with the factory. QUALITY SERVICE DEPT.
