I love this site. I am about to start my first rebuild on a Hurricane deckboat. its a 1988 196 Fundeck. The prior owner already cut the deck out and tried to replace the deck with 1/2" pressure treated and fiberglass the seams. Glass didn't stick. The stringers are gone. So, I am left trying to figure out where everything goes. Here is my questions: What wood do you use for stringers? do I need drain holes in the deck or can I just mount a bilge pump on the deck for a drain? Does the deck have a pitch or crown. thanks any help will be great.

Re: Hurricane Deck Rebuild

Welcome to iboats

Not having the old deck and stringers will make things alittle more fun.
The stringers in most glass rigs are plywood however there are also balsa or foam core out there as well.

The three boats that i have done were all flat. The deck will drain to the bilge as the boat will set slightly lower in the rear when in the water.

There are many ways to drain the water that may get under the deck. Some have used pvc glassed in at the bottom of the stringers and the same in any bulkheads to get the water to the bilge.

Good Luck

Re: Hurricane Deck Rebuild

After looking for a day at the boat I think I have figured our how I am going to build the stringers and deck support. Here is my question, Can I treat the wood with polyurathene and then glass with chopped stran fiberglass? The Polyuathene will make the wood waterproof and then the glass for strength. Do I need to pitch the deck in any way towards a drain/bilge? the is a bilge for under the deck. Can I tie into that one for my above deck drain?

Re: Hurricane Deck Rebuild

Coating your wood with poly will block the resin from grabbing the wood. Coat with resin and then glass them in.

Re: Hurricane Deck Rebuild

Is 20oz Fiberglass too heavy to use for the deck. My thought was to use two sheets of glass. laying the first one across the deck and the second the full length. i found some that is 86" wide and that would enable me to use one sheet only. Am I biting off more than I can lay at one time?

2 layers on the top side of deck 1 1/2 oz CSM then 7 1/2 oz mat on top to finish it.... I would put 1 layer of CSM on the bottom too.

check us composites for glass and resin :D

Re: Hurricane Deck Rebuild

When I glass my stingers I am going to coat the edges with resin. then Glue down to the hull. How many layers of glass do I need to put on them? Also can i use csm for that procedure? Also, when I put down the csm on the top, can i put down two layers of glass, once i get the first layer completely wetted out then put the other on top and wet out?

Thanks

I would bed the stringers in peanut butter (cabasol, 1/4" fiberglass chopped strands, resin and hardener) once you set the stringers in the PB fillet/cove both sides with a plastic spoon so you have a nice transition to the hull. Also round over the tops of your stringers so there not sharp 90 degree angles, the glass dosen't like to bend like that.

Next use 2 layers of 1708 biax for your stringers. The first layer should extend 6" passed the stringer to the hull, the second layer 5" so the load is spread to the hull.

Your deck you can use CSM first wet it up ,then follow up with your mat right over it.

Here is a link with some good info..... http://www.westsystem.com/ss/assets/HowTo-Publications/Fiberglass-Boat-Repair-and-Maintenance.pdf

Post us some pics of your project :D

Re: Hurricane Deck Rebuild

rickryder, thanks for the link. It has answered alot of the questions rolling around thru my head. One question is: what is the best product for stringers to glass over? PT Ply, foam, this is my first project and probably easy by most peoples standards. I have a great set up, have a 50 by 60 barn to work in with an overhead crane drill press and a friend that is a great mechanic and craftsman. He wants to learn how to lay fiberglass. Also, is 20 oz mat too heavy for the final deck material. I found some 86"w X15' long that would work great for my deck only one piece for final layup. It is only 24.00 a sheet as well.

Re: Hurricane Deck Rebuild

I'm no expert in fiberglass but from what I have read csm and 6oz cloth is fine. I would shoot a PM to oops and ask him about the 20oz.

As far as your stringer material 3/4" underlayment plywood. I just checked with my local lumber yard and the ply they stock has extrior glue and the underlayment has no voids in the core and smooth faces... I would go pick the brains at your local supplier... Other thing is 3/4 marine grade ply... only thing is that its 3x the cost of underlayment.

Re: Hurricane Deck Rebuild

Hey Tom,

Good Talking with you today!!! MDO Ply for the Stringers and Bed em with PL. You might have to order the MDO or HDO from Lowe's they do NOT always have it on Hand.

Cover em with 1708 and extend it out onto the hull 6-8 inches on each side.

Make Sure you have One or Two of these if you have a helper. Keeps all the air bubbles out. Have a cake pan full of xylene or acetone (careful of the fumes) on hand to keep it soaking in so the resin won't harden on the rollers. You'll definitely need to use some of those good KC masks for the fumes. Very toxic when you're glassin. Shake off and dry the roller as best you can before rolling again. Use the Cheap Chip Brushes to apply the resin. Start from the bottom and work up. Gravity is your enemy here and the resin will want to flow down and off and out of the cloth. Keep it wet. You'll have about 15 to 25 mins depending on the temp and the mix you use. Gloves are a MUST. Face Shield too! You will get messy. Start out with a small amount until you get used to it. After about two or three batches you'll start to get the hang of it and you can increase the amount you mix. Once it starts to set you're done. NO GOIN BACK!!!

Re: Hurricane Deck Rebuild

Woodonglass, thanks for all the info. You have saved me alot of headbanging. Been on the road all week and am now ready to get to work on tearing the rest of the boat apart. I am slowly getting all of my tools for glassing together. I have been looking for the HDO and MDO around Lowes and Home Depot and no one carries it. I can find MG all over. In you opinon is the MDO
fine for the stringers and deck? I plan on using fiberglass Resin for everything.

Re: Hurricane Deck Rebuild

IMO Yes, but... I am an Epoxy guy and it pretty much sticks to EVERYTHING. If you are going to use Poly then you might want to consider the MG. I have NOT attempted to stick poly to the surface of MDO so I am NOT going to say that it is OK. For stringers YES for Deck dunno. Epoxy ABSOLUTELY Sand with 60 grit and lay on1708 and yer dun!!!!! Yeah MDO is NOT easy to find. QUALITY lumber yard carry it. OKC will have it if you down there in your travels. Lowes and HD not so much. When you get ready to replace your transom you might want to make 5 of these. Cost you about $50 bucks (10 bucks each) to make em, but they come in real handy. I showed em to a guy last summer and he used em on his boat. Here's a pic. I have since changed the design a bit so now you just use large bolts instead of All Thread. Work great!!

Re: Hurricane Deck Rebuild

I probably have all the parts laying around for that clamp. I am going to use epoxy on my transom. It seems you use less epoxy coats vs poly. or am I misunderstanding. Also, looking at your design you dont have bolt holes thru the transom.

Re: Hurricane Deck Rebuild

Coats are about the same, Epoxy is just ell of a lot stronger and stinks ell of a lot less. But... cost IS significantly more. But Since you DON'T have to Pre-Coat the MDO, For ME, it all evens out in the end.

Re: Hurricane Deck Rebuild

That is what I was thinking about MDO/Epoxy. Where are you buying yours in Tulsa? I am going to start tomorrow to move the top cap off and finish cleaning out the foam. I cannot believe the amount of foam in the hull. 64OSBY, i will take some detailed picks of the hull. the deck had been cut out when I bought the boat. I am not the greatest with the camera but I will get ample photos.
