Been on dockside chat getting tired of politics thought I would come here and get some info.
When do you think there will be some hybrid boats?
Been seeing a lot of hybrid cars lately wonder if they would be viable in boating.

Re: hybrid boats?

They already have them, but you only see them on really large ships. Diesel electric powerplants have been around for a long time. With current technology, a hybrid setup would be too heavy for a small craft.

...and it won't help with gas mileage. Hybrids get better mileage because of the power they recover during braking. Obviously, boats do not have brakes. Do you really want 1000lbs of batteries and 58 miles of wiring in your boat? I sure don't...

Yachts with auxilliary motors and motor sailers are hybrids I guess. :)

Re: hybrid boats?

I don’t know the chance of an accident happening in an automobile is more than boating and it seems that the hybrid cars are rather heavy with the batteries.
My understanding is that a part of hybrid is of the charging of the battery is accomplished on braking but the majority is the alternator. Like you said no brakes but plenty of forward motion and it is not driven every day so don’t think it would need to be kept charged quite as much as a automobile. Of course would want plenty of flotation foam and before leaving house would check to make sure it was charged all the way. It was just a thought was wondering if any body heard if there was any development on that front.
Don

Dancer,

My first question is why?

You and especially ZmOz are correct. There is absoutely no benefit to a hybrid unless there is braking. None, zippo, nada. Becasue of this there is no such thing as a true hybrid boat. Boats with both an electric motor and a diesel generator are very common in the uh, let's guess 200' + range.

BTW, gasoline/electric hybrid cars are no more effficient than a diesel car of the same size. Especially if you don't do a LOT of stopping and starting.

Check this thread out, has a little more detail . . .

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=013265#000000

Re: hybrid boats?

Thanks for the informative link quietcat don’t know how I missed that one. Been shopping around for another vehicle thinking about a hybrid but also thinking about the vw jetta with a diesel pusher. Wow 3 to 4 k for batteries that will buy a lot of three-dollar gas .
Don

Re: hybrid boats?

IMHO, diesels are going to make a comeback in the US. Just ask our friends from the UK. They get diesels in cars that are smaller than a Golf.

In Europe they consider their cars are "greener" because they have better overall efficiency (many diesels) and laugh at us for our stupidity. In the US, we are often told that diesels are killing us and in fact they cannot even be sold in CA.

I call it the emissions du jour syndrome. NOx is still the main issue that we track here and diesels have high NOx. In Europe they are more concerned with hydrocarbon emissions (Greenhouse gasses, CO2 etc.) which are very low from diesels if compared to gasoline . . . Good luck sorting it out if you care. Probably the overall cleanest, fairly normal car avalable is the Honda Civic GX. It burns natural gas and will soon (any day now) be available with a little compressor for your garage that fills the vehicle tank from your house natural gas supply. Depending on the state etc. this can be low cost AND low emission (NOx and hydrocarbons). The recently signed Highway Bill will make it even better starting in 2006.

Wakeboarding boats wouldn't mind the extra weight. Efficient ballast. :)

Quietcat, Ca. does not allow diesel cars, how about pickup trucks with diesel engines?

Pickups yes, cars no. F250/350 yes, Excursion yes, Toureg no, Mercedes no. It is weight class, but can't remember what the cut is.

They can be sold in CA if they have 8500 miles on them.

Re: hybrid boats?

No diesels in CA? That's insane...

Our newer diesels have catalytic converters on over here so the NOx levels are low. There are also lower taxation classes for diesels with low NOx and particle emissions. Both mine and my girlfriends cars are diesel 4 cyls and return on average 45mpg-and her peugot engined turbo diesel Rover 418 is as fast as a comparable size gas engined car( built by honda too so not afected by the recent collapse of Rover.... :) ). With the RIB in tow we still get 38mpg-but with gas prices hitting the eqivalent of $8.50/gal and diesel at the eqivalent of $9/gal we need them.Dual-fuel diesels are starting to appear over here now (diesel+lpg at the same time)

We do however get red (untaxed) diesel for use in boats and agri vehicles which works out at about $3.50-$4 per gallon-but as a consequence any boat with a diesel engine is so darn expensive to buy that I can't afford to buy it and marinisation parts for diesels are excessively overpriced. It's the equivalent of $2400 for the marinisation parts for a Ford 1.8 litre turbodiesel... Hell, if gas prices were the same as in the USA I could afford to run an IL6 every day.

Nos,

Petrol engines' NOx is way lower though, like 10 - 1. However, there is a CO2 requirement coming in CA too. There's gonna be a real issue here when they figure out that diesel's are the best way to lower CO2. Funny really if you ask me . . .

Re: hybrid boats?

They have a one man solar powered boat at the NY state fair that can reach speeds of 19 mph. Looks like a kayak with 3 big solar panels attached to it.
