i'm leaking fluid from the steering unit. it's mounted on a 140hp Johnson Outboard. the reason it leaks is as I tilt the motor up and down the unit's "end mounting brackets" are binding to the motor mounting pin. this creates stress on the seals. the motor turns left and right fine.
how do i get these sticky (points up and down) lubed. i tried removing the mounting brackets with no luck.

thanks
busted knuckles bob

It would be interesting to know what kind of steering system you have.Teleflex/Seastar. Morse/Hynautic.A couple others are out there as well.Leaky hydraulic steering ,or any steering problem for that matter , is no fun and games.Fix it right or you may regret that you did'nt.

This is a Teleflex and the manual is: 1S for Searay. The support brackets are sticking to the support rod.
I spoke to the mechanic today and it looks like I have to heat wrench it off and replace the worn parts. I don't think I can get the bracket hot enough with my propane plumbing torch, plus the idea of flame around gas motors tells me to lay off this job. Any suggestions and where can I get these parts if necessary?
Thanks.

 "Today's peacock is tomorrow's feather duster"

Heat may well be in order here and will certainly speed things up ,however those two brackets are not a really tight fit and soaking in penetrant for a while might serve you well.I have also had some luck with a bar clamp between the two brackets and all nuts removed provided you have the room in the splashwell.

i removed the support brackets by soaking them with 'corrosion block'. i had to use an old fashioned 3 ft crowbar to pry them off the motor support pin. Moved the motor up and down while prying the brackets off. cleaned the salt corrosion off and greased it. moves like a hot knife through butter. :D
