Are the hydrofoils fitted to the cav plate any good for large Hp motors

c9908928, <br /><br />I use a doel-fin on my 70 Rude and it works great, if that's any help. I've heard that over time they tend to crack the cavitation plate sometimes from the stress placed on them. But overall, they work great! And Yes, they will work on larger motors.<br /><br />

i have a frend that has a 17' carolina skiff w/ a suzuki 60 4 stroke, had a little trouble getting on plain, added a fin and made the boat handle like crap, would get on plain better but then would push the bow down realy bad. had to take it off.

It couldn't hurt to add a foil. I got one from my dealer for $20 and the improvement in getting on plane was great. I only have a 79 85hp Rude but it made handle better and get more fishing time out of a tank of gas. If it doesn't work trim tabs may be your best bet.<br /><br />Dutch

It's not unusual to see some ill handling if the X dimension is not increased after a fin is installed. The increased X dimension is a benifit of a fin. The larger the fin - the higher you can go.<br /><br />Evin300 - how big of a fin are you using? Is it Delta Lift or King Fin?<br /><br />Just curious!

Basically it's the height the motor is mounted at. It is sometimes refered to as the distance between the running surface (or true bottom) and the cavataton (anti-ventilation) plate. On performance boats we refer to the distance between the running surface and the centerline of the propshaft. <br /><br />A fin will allow you to plane quicker at a higher mounting position. The higher mounting position should allow a higher top speed.<br /><br />Think about it this way - the fins are designed to run on or above the waters surface. It will then add support for stability. If the fin is below the surface it can actually pull the back of the boat down and/or cause an odd handling situation. <br /><br />Theres a lot more to it but thats the basics. Good luck!

thanks.that may be why my frends boat was pushing the bow down, the motor being to low, fin kicking it up. i just put my rig together, ran it sat with out a fin, ran ok. was going to put the fin on and try it this weekend but i dont want to have to reajust the height of the motor. 16' skiff with 15 4 stroke, proformance not a big deal.
