Hypalon coating repairs.

Hello all, i am converting my old avon rib to center console and when i removed the old console, some of the top layer of Hypalon was peeled off of the tube. what is the best way to go about patching the holes?



also, is there a way to get the old glue residue off the tube without messing it up too much?

There's not a Hypalon formula to paint coat peeled tube yet. Will need to place a large Hypalon patch on top, must use 2 part Hypalon glue. Will need Mek to remove old dried glue from tubes, follow Mek instructions, be gentle with product on tubes. Available at West Marine if you happen to live in USA.

About Hypalon patch : Not necesarilly must be of same tube gauge. For instance if your tubes are 0.9 mm you could glue 0.7 mm hypalon patch on top, try to match same Hypalon color. If you are unskilled about repairing tubes, better send rib to a inflatable repair shop that knows their work for a neat finish job.

MEK is MEK, but there is a new useless alternative sold in California as MEK has been banned.

I found MEK (I have PVC so I actually use Acetone) with a scuffy pad works awesome to remove the glue and barely remove any material, as it more polishes the material. The larger the holes in the scuffy the better. I buy it from Home Depot the scuffy pad is grey with lots of places for the glue to get caught up in. I cut it into small 1" X 3" strips and throw it away often. You MUST use neoprene chemical gloves rated for the MEK. Those too can be purchased at Home Depot or the like. Buy two pairs of gloves as they only last so long.

Obviously working with chemicals like MEK you want to work in a well ventilated area. The glue on the other hand requires temperatures and humidity to be within a set parameter which is critical. You will also need some way to rough the material surface up before applying the pre-gluing MEK wipe and glue.

For Hypalon I think Toluol (Toluene) is the preferred solvent.

No MEK is not the same as the catalyst for resin. That is MEKP. There is a big difference. MEK is the preferred solvent for PVC inflatables . For hypalon the preferred solvents are acetone and toluene.

Unfortunately we can't get Toluene in California, but if you can get it, by all means, it is the proper solvent for a pre-wipe gluing prep.

I use Acetone for cleaning PVC glue and MEK for the pre-wipe prep. Everything that I have read on hypalon says to clean with MEK and pre-wipe with Toluene. Much of it comes down to softening the fabric too much during the cleaning process. I guess it depends how much you have to clean...

as for removing the old glue that is almost close to impossible, i try all types of products and alot of elbow grease
and what kind of seem to work for me was kleen strip adhesive remover, its kind of a harsh chemical, at first looks it looks like a paint stripper, so I try it on all types of materials, to see if it will melt through, even place some on a plastic bag overnight, it didn't damage the bag, I apply on some old glue let it sit and all it does it softens the glue, you still have to scrap and wipe a lot of work, so i left the old glue and just place a second skin on the boat,

Difficult, but it can be done. Toluol is the best thing to use.
