Re: I am now a boat owner!!

Welcome, nice boat.
As a friend once said to me, "glad you are pleased with your new boat, the next time you will be happy with it is the day you sell it!"
He maintains this is the only two times you love your boat, but like me would not be without one.

Re: I am now a boat owner!!

Regarding cooling, your boat is not big enough for a generator and they are expensive anyway.

One not cheap but not expensive solution: there is 5000 BTU unit designed for the bow, under the birth, that can be run for a significant amount of time from a battery. Of course you would want to put in a second battery. If you are interested and you can't find info on it, let me know and I will find the one I am talking about.

Welcome to boating and iBoats, and good luck.

Always being the trouble shooter in my head, I wonder how difficult it would be to use a heat sink or in this situation a cool sink by using the water as the cooling component. A simple heat exchanger in the water and a heat exchanger in the cabin would only require a very small water pump and a small fan, both could work without much power use and wouldn't have the temperature advantage of air cond, but????
The exchangers would only need to be the size of paperback book, the cooled exchanger tossed overboard and the cooler, sat on the berth, turned on. Just thinking.............

Re: I am now a boat owner!!

its an omc outdrive.

when i bought it, it had a pertronix electronic ignition on it already. It fired up just fine but when i took it out it wouldn't shift out of gear without turning it off. So my father in law and me took the outdrive off and oiled the shift cable and tried to readjust them. well i think we did more harm than good. After we adjusted them we couldn't get any spark. When we switched out the distributor for a points type it fires right up everytime. So the more and more i read on here im thinking the esa is the problem because when i manually trip the interrupter switch the engine doesn't rev down. but thats the problems im haveing

sounds like the grounding switch for neutral is not connected or not working.

I have thought about such a setup myself. However, I haven't seen them on the market, so I figured it wasn't effective. May have some effect at night, but in the day time, it takes a lot of cooling to overcome the sun.

the above is what i just said.........

as far as cooling the cabin...

all cabins re usually hot......sauna hot depending on the color of the boat.
..the only cheap way i know of....is to build a cooling unit your self....

one quick idea, is to get a heater core/fan unit and run ice water thru it.....

a heater core with a fan IS a heat exchanger.
if you hook up a heater core and fan unit (out of a auto junk yard) to a cooler filled with ice water and use a small bilge pump to circulate the water. and hook it up so the water circulated back into the cooler......you have a cheap air conditioner.

lake water can be 70 deg.....that is too warm to cool a cabin.

swamp coolers.......(evaporative coolers) add too much humidity to the air, mould will start very quickly.

Lake at 70 deg? Are you in a geo thermal zone, because I have never heard of a lake at 70, ponds yes, but never a lake.

edit; depth is your friend. surface temps are higher than 10 feet down temps are. Go deep, it's cooler!

yes....the water is much colder 8 feet under the surface

we have a lake here called kalamalka......it is one of the worlds most beautiful lakes (nat geographical) it is bathtub warm ......did i say warm....i mean no shrinkage.....it may be a ""tad"" less than 70 in some areas......but with in 30 feet from the shore....it is really warm.

4 years ago....on a hot day.....we spent all day in the lake.....all day....over 8 hours.....4 of us, leaning on an air mattress...only getting out to get another round of "sody pops" no shivers...nothing.....actually....at 38 deg c the air seemed cold when we got out to get more.

im sure you have heard of our area......the big lake (okanagan) is not the lake to be on.....but it gets all the attention.....kal is......you are close.....so if you can....take the trip....it is worth it !

Thanks to everyone else for th ideas for cooling the cabin, I will probably just tell the old lady to deal with it......I am sure that will work???

I rode my scoot there last summer and loved the place. crossing the dalles sux, even on a motorbike (or especially) But I had a grand time riding the wonderful roads around there. However as the page turns, boating is the new sport. (never giving up my scoots, BUT?)

Thanks for the invite.
It is a bit away, however not so far for me, than you til the weather changes, to a warm boating day. Moving from Alaska 3 years ago, I love the short winters and so seldom does a snow shovel get used, I don't even see them at walmart!

It has worked for all of us men for so long, it is a proven system.

Now my mechanical brain is at work again. you really only need one heat exchanger for a lake water cooling system. a suction hose and a dump hose. The suction hose could be 15 feet long to reach the real cool temps and the pump doesn't work any/much harder than pulling water from the surface. Hose friction will increase the work slightly.
Then a dump hose just over the side. I may build one of these for a proof of concept one day.
Good luck, be gentle, act powerless, don't let her read this thread!

I have a buddy that lives in Vincennes(not sure of the spelling) that has a 22ft PowerQuest so I will probably meet us with him at Rend Lake most of the time but I have been told that Kincaid is the nicest and prettiest lake but not sure if they have a hp limit. But I am also only 25 mins from Carlyle and I know some there as well but not a big fan of Carlyle Lake. So I guess everywhere.

Where do you go?
