i am on the ocen now

so i have a 488 merc and i just did a tune up on it and i am in the middle of the water and my boat dont wanna start like it moves then back fires then shuts off wtf???? the boat was running for like a good hr without any problems........

Start with the basics. Check for spark,pump the throttle see if fuel is squirting into carb. look for loose wires at the coil.loose plug wires and or plugs...

Is it overheating???

Is this is a sudden thing? Does it sound like the starter is laboring? Not sure from your description but it could be hydrolocked...

ya so i had to get a tow cuz waves was to big to do any work. so this is what i did i took the carb fuel filter off and it looks like it had sand in it then i removed the fuel pump filter and it just fell apart (befor taking out pump filter i cranked over motor and no fuel came out the fuel lines so i put my finger to cover the hole and there was presser on the lines so it means the pump is good??) then i took the rubber hose goes from pump to water/fuel filter and i tryed to suck to see if i can get some gas and it was cloged so i took out the whole unit from the boat cuz i could not take the filter out and with a small hammer i tap the unit and then i was blowing air into the hose and like red clay came out the unit then i added some clean gas to take all that nasty red stuff out the unit. so when i did that the unit was not cloged but i did not put nothing back cuz i need to buy some filters tomorrow.. but i have a few ???? how can it be hydrolock i just got a new deep batt and when starting the motor looks like the batt is dead and do i really need the water/fuel filter right now just to test the boat??/ oh the way i was thinking it was a fuel problem was cuz the motor only stayed on with starter fuiled and sorry for the long post

Here is what you need to do.
Rebuild your carb, clean out the fuel pump, clean out the fuel lines, install a water seperating fuel filter kit between the tank and the fuel pump. clean the tank out if needed. Then change the filter yearly, when you do change it, empty the old one in a clear container to see if there are problems developing in the tank.
The water seperating fuel filters are a MUST HAVE with todays E-Fuels.
