Hi Guys
I have a 1988 Bayliner Capri with a 350 chev / 4 barrel carby along with a Cobra Stern drive.

I want to do an oil change on the rear drive, but cant find the drain plug for the top gear box, Ive been searching this forum for about an hour ,can anyone assist me.
I also removed a plug tonight and seemed to be a water jacket on the leg but funny enough the plug basically fell out and I noticed there was no thread, the thing is the cobra emblem was stuck over the top of this plug, what's the plug for? and what should I do to rectify it. I blew air into this hole and water came out the exhaust.

Sorry guys for asking such a question but stern drives are all new to me and its probably stairing right at me:confused:

I have seen answers about that plug before, and I believe that it is (or was, in your case) held in place by an internal nut. The plug was hidden for a reason...it is not meant to be removed by the owner.

I am sure that someone will come to your rescue about what to do next...just keep 'bumping' this thread until they do!

Ayuh,... It'll be laying there on top of the lower unit waiting for you, when you drop it to fix it...

There is actually a plate in there that screw keeps in place. Why it's there has been discussed, but no one really knows why for sure. I always assumed it was at a certain place that could erode away from the water flow, but who knows.

I took the drive off and layed it sideways and shook it to get the plate back in place. Serious locktie on the threads and never take them loose again.

Will it cause any damage if I just left the plate in there.

Also would you be able to advise me where the drain plug is for the top gearbox.

The bottom drain plug will drain the entire outdrive.

Thank you ;)

All I need to know now is that dreaded backing bolt in the leg will it cause any damage if I left it there or will it come out the exhaust when I start it

That I couldn't tell you as I never popped those little emblems off of my outdrive.

I removed the emblem to repaint the leg and I presumed it was a drain plug, but not to be ?

Ayuh,... You need to take it apart to find the backer, to put it back together Right...
Without it in it's proper place, your motor has No cooling system...
