Yes, no doubt. My brother is a captain of a smaller 300ft cargo ship, e spends months and months out at sea, he told me he wanted to do shorter trips and was looking for shorter runs that stay in the Pacific. I asked him about coming to MN and working Superior, he laughs and say "Remember the Fitzgerald", no way, he says, I get cold and wet enough in Alaska, but then my trips at least take me south.

Re: I confess: I am intimidated by my large lake

We have a place up on Leech Lake in northern MN. The wonderful thing about this lake is its size over 112,000 acres, with tons of reasonabley sized bays and coves to sneak into and the multi-species fishing is outstanding.

But I have to confess, I am intimidated going out onto the main basin. I am in Steamboat Bay, a smaller, shallow bay (proably 3,000 acres) and I have gone out to Walker Bay, but I have yet to get into the main basin. I really want to get in there and over to another Bay (Sucker, Portage and Boy) for more fishing opportunities, but quite frankly the size of it intimidates me.

Advise from some of you big lakers on what to watch out for, what not do. I've poked my head out onto the lake, but so far have stuck somewhat close to shore. My boat is only 16.5 and its red and white color makes me feel even more like a bobber out there  I cannot stay by the shoreline forever as it has hundreds of miles of shoreline, it would take forever for me to get to Boy Bay or even Portage.

I have included a map just for reference, but I would think big lake advise is universal. Thanks all

I don't think I'll be traversing any large lakes in my 8'Livingston, but your remark about the red and white color is invaluable and likely saved me from having to re-paint my boat. It's already white, so I was thinking of adding a color to increase the visibility... like red... so I wouldn't be "invisible" to other boats (or jet skis) while bobbing around on the lake. I definitely don't want to look like a bobber, though! Since tractor paint apparently works well, maybe the thing to do is see what's available in terms of "loud"(don't run into me, please) colors... maybe toss in some glitter for added noticeability (and to catch more fish!):fish2:

Hi Little, Welcome to iboats, and glad to see you posting!

Just FYI - resurrecting an old thread is a no-no, unless you are the original poster - that's why there is the red warning line at the bottom of the page. You'll get more responses if you start your own thread on this topic. Best regards!

Re: I confess: I am intimidated by my large lake

As a teenager trolling in a 16' boat a charter captn came by and asked what I was doing 18 miles off shore on Lake Erie. I had no answer, just asked for a compass heading back to Presque Isle. Bought a VHF and Loran after that escapade. Ran a 24'er there for years out to 33 miles. Now as an old fart I run a 21'er on the Atlantic but pick my days and still stay within 30 miles, usually much closer. Watch the weather, watch the wind ~~ and chabge means to at least head toward shore.

Thanks for the welcome.

I hadn't checked my messages to see the "Welcome!" post (with 5 simple rules) until yesterday... and have already sent an apology to the moderator who sent the message. I've managed to break one of the rules on my 1st day and with my 1st post. I'm sorry.

All good, and welcome aboard. With that said, let's let this one sink silently into the Archives :)

That is a pretty big body of water, I am accustomed to our Lake which is roughly 2600 acres (my math) and last year ventured out onto Lake George which is 28,000 acres! My jaw dropped as it was quite intimidating at first.

Take it slow and stay within your comfort zone.

I can so easily understand the OP's intimidations. I would view that large an open water area in the exact same light. However, I would start venturing out around the shoreline further and further and learn the lake before cutting across that type open water. You also have to know your boat's capabilities and yours as well. Any type boat improperly driven can become a serious issue if you push the limits not fully understand the capabilities. And you could cut across smaller sections of the lake before taking on the middle.
