I do not recommend Luminox

The following is a factual firsthand account.

Does anyone else have a Luminox watch? Regrettably I do, and it's an unqualified POS, as is the company's attitude apparently. I bought one in February 2010. By April 2011 parts were failing and it wasn't keeping accurate time, so I sent it in for warranty service. Once I got it back it worked okay for, oh let's see, three and a half months. Now I'm not only experiencing the same issues as before, but I've got water inside the watch and the second hand has literally come loose and is sliding around. I sent an email to Luminox detailing my issues. Their response?

So, even though it's not their problem I contacted the store where I bought it and they were kind enough to forward my email to their Luminox rep. His response was to ask me if I had been wearing it in the shower. Really? Rather than boring you further I'll just say the rest of the conversation wasn't helpful to anyone. So, I guess my point is, if you buy a Luminox watch don't expect it to perform as advertised, and if and when you find that it doesn't, don't expect any customer service. That is all.

Maybe get a Rolex, they don't tear up, last a long time, hold their value if you ever decide to sell it...mine is 34+years old now, replaced face and chrystal after 25 years, so far, so good! Don't buy no more cheap watches!:)

Had my Citizen Eco-Drive for about 8 years. Been through everything. I only take it off to sleep and shower. Not bad for $300.

That sucks Incoop. Whats funny is the guy asking you if you wore it in the shower. Like even the cheapest Timex/casio watches, I would assume it was rated water resistant to 100M, right? So a shower should be a moot point.

If you are in the market for another decent watch, I was happy with my Seiko, and apparently so was the crack-head who stole it out of my car.

Yeah, I was pretty well flabbergasted. This wasn't a cheap watch either. It wasn't really expensive in relative terms, but one would expect a $300 watch to perform a little better than that.

I'll bet if you wrote Luminox a letter explaining this they'd send you a new watch!...worth a try! Hopefully they receive your letter BEFORE they read your rant or you may get sued for Watch Defamation!;)

I sent the company an email. When they failed to respond I sent an email to the retailer, who contacted their Luminox rep. He's the one who asked the ludicrous shower question, hence my rant.

Only problem with a Rolex is you have to have them serviced every 5 years becuase the lubricant dries up. $400 to have it cleaned out. Because the lubricant dried up on mine I stripped a gear so an added expense.

I don't buy (relatively) expensive watches or sunglasses. Lost too many of each.

My exact reason for buying my first Tag Hauer because the rolex services are so much money. My Tag is bullet proof but was not $300 either.

The cheapest best watches now seem to be citizen and swiss army. I bought my wife a swiss army for about $300 and it is a great watch for the money.

If you want a knock around watch get a wegner or a cheap casio.

Moving up the line a Tag, a Breitling or an Omega are all fine watches.

One of today's great ironies.

An $18 Timex digital, is as accurate, as a $4000. Rolex When the Timex battery gives out, after 5 or 6 years, ptich it in the trash and get another one.

Of course, the Timex will never look as cool, as a Rolex, so that'w here the price it truely paid. ;)

Re: I do not recommend Luminox

The reason the rep asked the question about the shower, is that the steam can get into water-resistant watches, and even water-proof watches if the case has ever been open (battery change, etc.). Makes me wonder if the store that sold it to you had to replace the battery before it was sold. As for the second hand, that's a quality issue that the manufacturer (you would think) would repair/replace under warranty.

I NEVER take off my watch. And I do mean NEVER. I'm currently in my 4th year with my Movado, and have had no issues. Had to have a link added (funny how age makes your watchband shrink), and took it to a fancy watch repair place to have that done ($20). If (when) I need the battery replaced, I'll go there again, not just any jeweler who says they can do it.

Watch before the Movado was an ESQ (owned by Movado), and before that was a Skagen. I'd recommend any of the three for accuracy and durabilty.

Re: I do not recommend Luminox

Well, in fairness to Luminox they will service the watch under warranty, but I have to ship it to Rhode Island at my expense and wait two or three weeks for it to be returned. It's one thing to do that once, but to do it twice in a matter of months on a watch I've owned for under two years is unreasonable in my opinion.

I agree. Wonder if there is a Lemon Law for watches. Just curious, retailer wouldn't take it back in exchange for a new one?

Sorry, but I've had mine cleaned and set once or twice in 34 years...had real good service, so far...but it might tear up tomorrow. I've always thought that Rolex's advantage is that they're really very waterproof!...I wear a $10 Walmart supercheap at home, working on equipment, usually last about a year or so...

No, because the series has been discontinued. Guess we know why. I'd buy one from a different series if they gave me a credit, but they're not interested. Think I'm just screwed on this one.

+1. I received a Rolex as a gift. Its a beautiful watch but having to service it every 4-5 years at a tune of $400.

I have a Casio G-Shock that has a solar cell for power, and sets itself to the Satellite clock signal, so I never even have to worry about DST. I purchased that watch for $75 4 years ago. I can buy a new one every year and it won't cost me what the maintenance on the Rolex will cost me, plus I don't have to worry that someone is gonna bash my head in or wave a gun in my face to take it from me.

Ask for a replacement as a good faith measure

They recommend 3-5 years. Mine is a Datejust so maybe the model makes a difference.

I also wear mine every day so that also may make a difference. Its a beautiful watch but expensive to buy and own. Probably wouldn'y buy another.

I bought a Citizen skyhawk about 7 years ago and have had NO problems with it. I wore it 24/7 for about 5 years but dont wear a watch most of the time any more. IF I were in a position where I needed to wear one all the time and needed another, Citizen would be my choice hands down for any price. Just my .02?
