I have a 1984 120hp mercruiser i/o. I trying to get it to run. My question is when i put the muffs on, is there anywhere the water is suppose to be coming out besides the muffs? The boat is not running when doing this. Next question is when i try to start it just turns over. I changed the plugs, pump the old gas out. The boat sat for 2 years. Any insight would be much welcomed. I also did a oil change using the trash bag trick I learned on here. What a great forum this is. Will give plumbing tips to anyone that needs them

Got to take it one step at a time. Do you see any fuel squirt down the carb when you goose the throttle? No fuel, no start. Also pull a plug connector, insert any old spark plug, hold it to ground and crank the engine. Watch for spark.

Since it sat for 2 years, likely fuel is not reaching the engine.

1. Check that fuel is getting to the carb. You'll need to prime the fuel lines. The filter is also probably dry, take it out, fill it and reinstall.
2. Pour a capful (soda bottle size cap) of fuel into the carb throat.

Good luck.

2nd what qystan said. you will probably have to remove the fuel pump filter cover and filter and pour a small amount of gas into the fuel pump to prime it. don't pour out of a large gas can, you will spill it in the boat. on the water question, where do you see water coming from? i can tell you where it comes from when running on my boat, never noticed when not running. the kill switch is a required safety item that shuts off the engine in case you fall overboard or jump up out of the seat. it should be close to the drivers seat and have a string or lanyard that attaches to the driver. the switch might look like a button or small post. and you will need a boating liscense if you don't have one, which will require passing a coast guard written test.

I searched for a kill switch, don't see anything that it could be. Is it usually on the dash with the other gauges?

I don't see water coming from anywhere except the muffs. I thought the water would come out a little hole or something but maybe that is just when running.

Re: I dont have a clue????

i think no water anywhere but the muffs is correct when not running. once running it will come from prop, exhaust ports behind transom, and pee hole in lower drive and any open petcocks on motor (older IL165 at least). you may have to install a kill switch somewhere, they are required by law in u.s. and if you do have one now and it is not out of the run circuit, your motor will crank over but not start. keep looking. as new as your boat is, i would think that there is one somewhere.

Re: I dont have a clue????

Hey plumber I think you should have a kill switch on that year of boat. Some are attatched to the remote (gear shift and throttle handle) base,if its on there it should be a toggle switch. Or it could be on the dash somewhere.Might be a plunger style if its on the dash(might look like a red button). It will be in an area where it can be attatched to the driver, with a lanyard while driving. If it is not in the run position, you will not get juice to your ignition system and WILL NOT be able to start the engine. You should probably start here, and make sure this this isn't whats giving you all your greif.

Good luck.
Jim

Would it look like a cigerite lighter, because I have one of those. It don't have a lanyard though.

Re: I dont have a clue????

Plumber,

It looks to me that maybe you are getting ahead of yourself, as boomyal suggested, do the basics first. Is there spark? Is there fuel squirting into carby (is it carby or EFI?).

Do your testing in sequence, for example - if no spark, check points (is it points or elec?), if points o/k, test voltage to coil, if no voltage, test ballast resistor and ignition switch etc. etc.

It may very well be your kill switch (if you have one) but unless you are sure you will need to start your tests from the spark plugs and work your way back.

It sounds like you are using rubber cup muffs, its normal for water to leak past these when under pressure - they are not a perfect seal. Most of the water will enter the outdrive and on into the cooling system - but it has to exit somewhere (doesn't matter if the motor is running or not), it either exits through (usually) the exhaust outlet on your leg or its filling up your boat!

Hope this helps.

Aldo

Re: I dont have a clue????

Hey pluber,If you don't see a lanyard, its a good indication that your kill switch,is NOT in run position. The lanyard is meant to be attatched to the driver, when pulled from switch it activates the kill switch to stop engine. Are there any buttons or switches near the drivers seat that you don't know what are used for? What type of boat is it? If you post the type of boat someone on iboats probably know exactly where it is located.

Jim

If there is no spark, the kill switch may be activated. If there IS spark, forget the kill switch.

I am not sure if this will engender a new topic as I am a newbie and certainly do not wish to offend anyone, but what is the trashbag oil change trick? I did a serch on former posts with no results. This sounds like something I need to know.

I doubt there is a kill switch,if you don't see it its not there.
I have a 1985 model with no kill switch.
In these years alot of boats didn't have them, low profile bass boats have them. I think fishing tounaments require them.
