I have an 86 searay with a 3.0L merc I/O. I noticed a small leak the other day just beneath the water intake in the engine compartment. I couldn't find any cracks and was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to narrow it down!!!
Maybe try taking a wad of toilet paper and dry off all the water thats dripping and then jam it in a few places to see where the toilet paper is getting wet. Start high and mover your way down until the TP is wet than you will have a better idea where your leak is starting. Could just be the intake hose is dripping
"Beneath the water intake hose"but above the drive shaft you might consider pulling the drive to check the boot for water.Other souorces:
exauxt system, shift boot torn, transom leaking, corroded hole thru transom housing.
thnx for all the ideas. I seems like it is coming from that lip underneath the intake... could it be transom seal??? and if so what are my chances of sealing the area with silicone??
That would mean your Transom is Rotten,+ Collapsing..........
Nothing short of Repairing the Transom is going to Fix it........
And,......
If that IS what's happening,.....
You can Expect the engine Coupler to Puke soon.......
I have an 87 sear ray... I had a leak and finally found it using a hose from the outside.. The water was coming thru the Anodes on the bottom of the drive. I pulled the bolts out and they were corroded.. Bought some new ones and good to go..
Did you replace just the anode?? On mine the anode screws on ,but the bolt goes thru the hull with a nut on the inside... I had the wife spray a hose all around the drive while I looked inside with a flashilight, I seen water coming in a little around the bolt.. when I took the bolt out it was corroded badly.. I dont kow if this is your problem, there are so many it can be, but from what I always see on here, this is something that is never brought up, that I bet on an older boat is common...
