Re: I Got Me a Mercury !!!

The motor and boat look great! That merc looks even nicer on the boat. It's running on plane which I think is GREAT! I sure hope that's freshwater you're in. Saltwater and old mercs don't mix well.......
I love a "transom shot" as far as the pics..... :)

Thanks,

Salt water; and I do recall much hearsay back in the day about the Merc's of that era being better in fresh water. We shall see how it goes. . . no serious money at stake here.

When my brother had one of these engines (about 40 years ago), I recall that it actually went swimming (in the same water) once . . . he was quite in a panic  . . . . "flush it and get it running again", we told him. :D

As far as a transom shot for pics . . . here is one.

Not knowing the full history of the engine or anything, it does appear to have been primarily run in fresh water. I had mentioned the tell tale 'pee' hole being blocked, earlier in this thread. I found that it had been seriously clogged with mud, but I cleared it out and it works well.

I changed the rubrail on the dinghy this year (to white), as the previous rail left marks on my boat., but I still need to add some stern handles or something.

Re: I Got Me a Mercury !!!

There is one thing that I am still trying to sort out . . .

FUEL LINE CONNECTOR

Female bayonet style . . . It seems that the one I got is too big . . . does not fit into the inset/flange that is around the mating male connection on the engine. I rigged something up temporarily, but I want to get the right thing.

The one that I got is plastic . . . the body surrounding the twist-lock is too big to fit inside the panel opening that surrounds the connector (see picture & arrow). . . the older style are metal. So, it appears that the metal ones are smaller . . . :noidea: There does not appear to be clear information about 2 different sizes, etc on the Internet.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated :hail:

Re: I Got Me a Mercury !!!

Yup, figures that I would need the $50 connector

I found it online for about $10 less than the oldmercs site. . . could not find it here on iBoats.

There are some metal Mercury connectors for about $15-$20, but I'm betting those are still a different size than what I need. Looks like they only used that connector in about 1968 - 1971 . . .

Thanks for your help on this.

That's the wrong connector tho. 30635T3 was only used from '61-'71. 22833 comes up as 1980-1985

Yup, female connector - small version . . . As stated, the one I got (plastic) is too big . . . no fit. I also found an old thread where a guy ground down the body of the plastic connector, only to find that the connector itself did not mate properly and leaked. . . He had a 1971 Mercury.

I ordered, hopefully, the correct one ($43  ) last night. . . . I guess outboard motors ARE expensive

P/N 30635T3 . . . Right? :noidea:

Yep, that's the right P/N... I think you will find some of that motor is ungodly expensive for what parts are, like that connector, but some like water pump kits and spark plug wires will be cheap. Plenty of parts to that are NLA and in limited supply just as most Old Merc parts. The problem is that the aftermarket did not pick up a lot of the parts when they were able to like they did with OMC, so now that Mercury is or has discontinued many parts, used parts or $$$ NOS is what we got.

Re: I Got Me a Mercury !!!

UPDATE:

I received the $45 !!! fuel line connector and installed it on the fuel line, etc.

IMG_2724.jpg

Then I went to take the dinghy/motor out the the 'big boat' and the ol' Mercury would not start . . . tried for quite some time, checked all sorts of things, etc. No go.

So, I shlepped the motor back to my house to do some deeper diagnostics . . . it turned out that the barb fitting for the new fuel line connecter was some how blocked  :noidea: Once I cleared it the engine seemed to run fine.

So after test running it for a while my brother and I put the engine back on the dinghy and took the boat out for a spin or two. It had been cloudy, windy and rainy much of the day, but by late afternoon the sun was coming out. Here is a video that I put together . . .

Glad you got the right barb despite my efforts to point you to the wrong part. She seems fine in the chop. And a practical cup holder test too. :)

Re: I Got Me a Mercury !!!

Just wanted to mention that the gray fuel line you have (if it's the kind I'm thinking of) is the worst ever. I had a similar blockage problem on mine because the liner of the hose delaminated. That gray stuff also gets as brittle as a potato chip when it gets below 35 degrees. Just thought I'd mention it. If you duck hunt or fish in the cold it is annnoying.

Yea, if the fuel line craps out, I may get some better stuff to replace it. Probably will not use it in cold weather though . . .

Re: I Got Me a Mercury !!!

One issue that I am having . . . .

The engine typically takes several pulls . . . maybe 4-5 pulls . . . to get it started. Once it starts, there is a brief oil/gas slick that emerges in the water. . . not a good thing. Once the engine is running, it seems normal and does not emit a slick, etc.

It has been many years since I have run an old-style 2 stroke boat engine, but I do not recall them making much of a slick . . . usually just the expended oil from the engine, which is more coagulated, it seems.

So, I am wondering if this it just raw gas/oil mix from starting . . . or perhaps some other issue. I did check the lower unit gear oil, and it seemed fine, no water, no milky, etc.

Thoughts ????

:bump: Just bumping this up to get any input on the brief 'oil slick' issue when starting the motor . . . TIA

Re: I Got Me a Mercury !!!

After doing a bit more searching and reading on various forums, it seems that the oil slick might be caused by the carb needing a cleaning . . . Needle valves, etc not seating properly, causing a rich mixture, etc

I also had a 1980's vintage Yamaha 8 hp on my sailboat, and do not recall it leaving a slick or anything like that. So, maybe I'll do a bit of carb cleaning this weekend and see how it goes.
