hello everyone, i was told that you guys are the real deal at troubleshooting boat problems.

i have a 92 suzuki DT85

my problem is;

the engine has a little bit of a rough idle and when i try to open the throtle up it doesn't respond very much. if i let it sit at full throtle it will either catch up and plane the boat out or it will start spitting and sputtering. some times it will even go dead when throtleing back down.

what i've done and found so far;

i've replaced all 3 spark plugs (that seemed to help a little)

i pulled the inline filter, it was very clean

i pulled the fuel water seperator, it had a bunch of sand and rust in it, replaced it (no differance in the way the motor ran)

i replaced the fuel line bulb

i tefloned the fuel line connectors that screw into the bulb and put hose clamps on it instead of the zip ties that i had on it before.

none of this made a huge differance

tonight i pulled the gas tank out of it and there was some rust in the bottom of the plastic fuel tank from the float sensor being all rusted up. i took the float sensor out and rinsed the inside of the tank with gas and stored it until i get a new float sensor.

the guy i bought this boat from claims to have put fuel stabilizer in the fuel last jan. most of the places i fish don't allow gas motors so the fuel he put in it in jan was the same stuff i drained with a some other fuel that i added along with some seafoam. i added the gas in december so the old fuel had been in there almost a year. i haven't ruled out bad gas yet and won't be able to until i get the fuel tank back in.

am i missing anything?? i was told by 2 other people that had similar problems that it may be a stator. i've never heard of a stator and i can't find it on any schmatics of my engine.

any thoughts or guidance is surely welcome

thanks

Disassemble, thoroughly clean and replace "kits" in all three carburetors. Not hard with a manual.

My last Suzuki had "zippers" on the carbs, they had to be cleaned so often.:rolleyes::)

try seafoam treatment.

go to seafoam web site and follow the directions. My ATV was running like crap and I treated it and it fixed it up

BE CAREFUL. Running the engine with fouled carbs, Sea Foam or not, can EASILY melt down a piston, or three.

I'd use 100% fresh fuel first and see what happens. Even with stabilizer, I would never run year old gas.

Re: i got the suzuki blues

i called and talked to an outboard mechanic in my hometown and he asked me a very simple question. do you know 100% that fuel is freely flowing, i said no. he said "QUIT RUNNING IT!!"

no fuel flow means no oil flow.

i'm taking it to him and he is going to fix it for me and only charge me parts. he wants to compression check all the cylinders to make sure no damage has been done too.

thanks for the help guys but i'm letting someone who knows exactly what their doing take a look at it.
