My question is- can this be repaired or do I need to replace the block? Will a 350 Chevy engine mount up to the drive? I am new to this. I have built cars for years, but this is my first experience with a boat. Any advise would be welcome. I don't want to invest an arm and a leg on this project.

I can tell ya one thing...motors junk. Find another marine block the same and swap the old block stuff to it. Want to spend a lot MORE money? Replace it with something else.

Will any other blocks match up to this drive? Where can I find a block?

Is it Now a 350 Chevy,..??....
I don't do much with Volvos,....

The Block you have Now is No Doubt, JUNK,... No repairs there.....

A Junkyard Block will work, provided it's of the Same Vintage......

You'll Also want to look over the Exhaust Manifolds,....
I'm Betting they are Junk as well......

The Volvo AQ225 is a 305 Chevy.

I really appreciate all of this feedback. Call me dumb. But this is all new to me. Is there a difference between automotive 350 block and a marine 350 block?

You weren’t kidding when you said you were new to boating....................! Buying a boat is the cheap part, maintenance and repairs is what costs the money in this business.

It's the Grind of the Cam,........

You'll want a Marine grind,.......
A Truck, or RV grind is Soooo Close,.... It'll work just Fine in a Boat Motor........

Might as well start with a 350 block and crank. Go with forged pistons, quality rods, Chinese forged is a good idea, and a set of 350 heads.

The 305 heads will net way too much compression, as the chamber CCs are very small. The valves are small too and shrouded more than the 350 heads. Stock vortech heads flow nicely and can be had cheap. Oil pan, windage tray and such will transfer as long as its the same vintage.

New timing set, oil pump, and pump drive shaft, with a new cam and lifters youll also want a new fuel pump pushrod, as the lobe would go flat.

A manifold to but a carb on the vortech heads is a common part from the after market.

Thanx for all of the advice. Will a 1970 350 block match up?

The dipstick on the other side is only minor. It won't interfere with anything. Is that the only difference?

Try to match the casting number on the block. located on the back flange of the motor port side . Where the bell hosing bolts up to it. That way you know you are swapping apples for apples. Look here for some info on casting numbers.http://www.mortec.com/castnum.htm

I just repowered a 24' 1981 Skipjack that had a worn out aq225D 305 4BBL with a Vortec 5.7L Crate motor w/4-bolt main, an edelbrock performer manifold, Holley Commander Throttle Body Injection, & HEI computer controlled distributor. Took me several months to figure out how to find the right flywheel and starter then to calibrate the Holley Fuel Injection. The re-power is the best thing ever highlighted by far greater power and fuel economy. I have loads of details on how to find all the parts a good prices. The flywheel is a rare bird that Michigan Motorz wanted $300 for but I found for $90 and is out of a particular Camaro. I used an RV Cam that I believe os the same as used by Mercruiser on the MPI 5.7 and 1.6 rockers. Went from swingning 17" to a 21" and the boat runs 47 MPH while getting 25% better fuel economy that the old 305.

you may correct me if im wrong.. but isnt the dipstick on that Volvo actually a Banjo fitting screwed to the bottom of the oil pan in the drain plug hole??

and honestly I think one of the other things that has not been talked about enough are the heads. You are going to have all Stainless valves and seats in marine heads.. along with that, all the freeze plugs (core plugs) are not going to be made of pot metal either.

you can probably use the same flywheel that you already have and if you are worried about it.. get it balanced.

A good rule of thumb I have looked at in the past is how the starter is mounted. Either with both bolts across from one another, or if they are staggered.

I have done so many repowers, so you can listen if you want, but.. the cost of building an automotive engine for a marine application is so much of a hassle for the cost,, you should really just look into either getting a used marine engine that is tired, and do a little machine work to it.. or just get a re-manufactured long block. You are going to have to replace exhaust manifolds and elbows anyway.. (or at least I would). that way.. you know its going to last and you reduce the possibility of having to "tinker" with it all the time.

but, I honestly think that any older v8 (305,350) block will bolt up to the bell housing. I actually think that a 4.3L or a big block will do the same too.. but dont quote me on that ..

oops.. i just realized this post was from years ago. HA HA HA.. that's awesome that you managed to build an EFI Vortec for the boat. Good job! and disregard my post.
