this serial number is off of the small round plug on the top of the motor, as the label was not legible. any more info needed just tell me where to look. I am not very familiar with mercs and basically think the serial number thing totally sucks, it is way too confusing. the cowl has been sanded and painted and someone put 150 stickers on it. But I suspect it may be a 175. maybe an 87 or 88 but not sure. any help very much appreciated.

I assume that is a V6? That serial number shows as an '87 175HP, or an '86 135HP or an '87 150HP motor. There are other V6 motors with higher HP and that serial number.

Maybe the block has a part number you can look up for those years + models to match it up.

thanks Chris..yes it is a V-6..it appears to be the same size as my friends 150 VR2...just crazy for merc to not have a better serial number system..they must have been on drugs when they came up with the idea. I would really like to know exactly what motor I have if possible. any ideas would be helpful. any part numbers that i could find that would help, just let me know. Thanks

The system Merc use beats the he!! out of the 'other' systems. You need a degree in cryptography to decode the early johnrude numbering system! The newer ones aren't much easier. And not even the Yamaha distributor knows how to get a year from a Yamaha engine number!

The Merc system is simple and easy to use.

The mercury database since the 80's or so assigns a sequential serial number to each engine coming off the line. One might be a V6, and the next a 4 horse. Anybody can go to the merc site, dial in their serial number, and know what it was when it came off the line.

When guys like Sschefer get ahold of it, however, all bets are off. My XR4 doesn't 'xakly match the parts diagram either.

hope it helps

I went to the merc site and could not find a way to search for my motor. I will go back and take a closer look. I am starting to really like merc motors as far as working on them, they are pretty simple to troubleshoot. and I love the fact that merc does not have to disconnect the shift rod when dropping the foot, Yammys are the same, those shift rods are a real pain on the old v-4 omc

I have been saying this for 15 years and nobody seems to agree with me, they all say the johnno system is easy.....BS!!! Takes me 1/2 hour, 2 trolley jacks and a bottle jack and a few scraped knuckles to get a Johnno V4 looper box back on. And the old crossflows? If you don't end up breaking off one of the choke enricher hoses, you're damn lucky! And what's with the 30hp? Hide the damn connection in the water intakes? How stupid is that!?!?! Or what about the 9.9/15? Partly drop the leg, then try and get in with a screwdriver to remove the coupler screw.... and then try and get it all back together without swearing..... Every engine a different system... Thanks OMC, thanks a bunch!!! On ANY Merc it's a 3 minute job!

Chris..........
