Do you grease it regularly?

Pullnit,

Usually hard starting after a warm soak is caused by one of two things.

1. The carbs leak unburned fuel into the crankcase-leaking needle valve. Lots of smoke.

2. The fuel system has lost its prime. No smoke.

Is the primer bulb hard when this happens?

Hey djohns
It doesnt seem to smoke after this happens. The motor always leaks some amount of fuel in cowling when I trailer home.If the motor is losing prime, where do I look? Thanks John

Pullnit,

Again, does the primer bulb remain hard? Is it hard when it does not start correctly?.

The title of your posting sure gets most guys attention. Don't feel bad you are not alone with this problem.
Your enging should not leak fuel in your cowling. Sounds like your float may not be set if this is a carb model. Just pull your carb if it is and rebuild (while your in there you might as well change everything). Replace the needle and seat. If it is fuel infected then I'm sorry I can't help you.

Due to the fuel spill in the cowling,I am starting to lean towards rebuilding the carbs.I cant get to the water until the weekend ,so I cant check the firmness of my ball.Lets say I sqeeze my ball and it is soft. What would be the cause for the engine to lose prime?
Thanks again John

My 2 cents worth.
Float posibly set to high and, or, bad needle seat. Rebuild your carbs.
Fuel line leak. About 6' assorted sizes. Make sure you check vro input line and crank pulse line also (not easy to get at).
Bad bulb.
Fuel tank vent blocked.
Leak @ filter.
Went thru same thing a few weeks ago. Gave up and changed everything. Last to change was pulse line and that was cracked.
When changing lines, avoid using worm type steel clamps. Fittings are plastic and will break easy.

O.k
Thanks for all the help.I am going to rebuild carbs. One more question about the fuel primer bulb.It never gets rock hard.I can hear fuel sloshing in bulb when I squeeze when it is full.
Thanks again John

Could be a bad bulb. But it could be sucking air anywhere. If you want to spend the time. Remove it from your system, plug the output side with a bolt and clamp, hook a vacuum guage up to it and pump it up a bit. See if it holds but for what they cost, about $5, change it. You can buy the entire fuel line with a bulb for about $10 at Walmart.

I just had the top piston in my Johnson burn. I was told by 2 different marine mechanics that it was most likely caused by one of those cheap $10 Wal-Mart fuel lines. BE CAREFUL!

How could a fuel line burn out a piston? It delivers fuel to the carbs not the cylinders.

Jughead it sounds like you got shaded by your mechanic. There is no way that the primer bulb would cause this. I do however recommend you stay with OMC (now Bombadier) as they have lasted me 20+ years. I bought one at Wal-Mart and the sun fried it in about two years.

Pullnit: The primer bulb should stay firm after you start. It won't be totally hard and you can always squeexe some fuel through it. All this does is make your float be under extra pressure and help it to stick. The excess fuel should go through your overflow. Rebuild the carb and set the float to be level when turned upside down. Change the needle and seat. Make sure the high speed jet is PERFECTLY clean. For five bucks replace the primer bulb. The carb kit is only about 15 dollars.

Let us know. Don't take any wooden nickels.

I wojuld love to hear more about how the 10 buck bulb and line trashed the top piston. BTW that is the best title of a post I have ever seen.. really gets the job done,,
