I am brand spanking new to boating. My family just had a small boat given to us. We know nothing about it except that it's metal and 13 ft. long. Also, it came with a Mariner 9.9 M motor strapped to it.. We know nothing about this as well. I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out the fuel/oil ratio for this engine. If it helps the serial number is : 067488 and it says made in japan. Also it looks older, I'm guessing early 90's but I'm not sure. We had no papers or anything with this wonderful gift. So any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I just registered today for this forum. So any direction around this site for a new boater would be greatly appreciated as well.

You want to mix 87 octane regular at a 50:1 ratio with TC-W3 rated outboard oil, Marrains.

That would be 1 pint oil to 6 gallons of gas.

You would do well to get an Owners Manual and a Service Manual for it. Being naive about the operation and maintenance of an outboard can be very expensive and frustrating.

1st get a title and registration, before spending a cent. hopefully benefactor, has these. fuel ratio, 50:1 TC-W3 outboard motor oil. it is a great combo for motor and boat.

Your engine is a two-stroke (also called 2-cycle) and requires an oil specificifically for outboard motors. The designation TC-W3 can be found on the container label. If you don't see it, don't use it. Standard two-cycle oil as used in Lawn Boy mowers, weed whackers, chain saws etc is not to be used in an outboard. Ask a friend that knows boats to show you how to start the engine and NEVER start it unless the engine is in the water or hooked up to a garden hose using what are commonly called "muffs" which are designed for this purpose. Failure to do so will immediately ruin the water pump impeller. Since you have no idea how long the fuel in the tank has been there, drain it refill with fresh fuel mixed with the appropriate amount of oil. You might add a fuel system cleaner to a few tanks of fuel to ensure the system is clean.
