I hit a deer.

Driving in the middle of our town yesterday at 4:30 pm. Did not see it and it must have tried to jump over the vehicle. Smashed the windshield and messed the passenger side fender and door a little. I have heard that their is no deductable for hitting a deer, but the adjuster said that there is. So, how is it in your state? Does anyone have any suggestions. I was driving my wifes 2003 4-Runner and I am OK. Oh Yeah, the silly thing got up and wobbled away.

Indiana has limited coverage, based on your carrier. If I had no coverage, I would try to clean any deer evidence off if possible, drive it to Wal-Mart, and claim someone hit it while I was taking advantage of the low prices.
But I just don't like the Insurance companies arrogance.

Yeah, I coulda said that the falling low prices just bounced on out and smashed my ride. But a Policeman just happened to come down the hill as I was geting out of the vehicle.

Must have been a hell of a high bumper to get the windshield too. :D :D :D

Didn't cost me a dime in Maryland when I hit one. I don't know if it was my coverage or state requirement. I usually don't ask when it doesn't cost.
The adjuster looked at car & pulled out some hair out of the trim & just wrote estimate.
$1200 for a little headlight & fender damage.
The deer didn't make it.

Re: I hit a deer.

There was no deductible when a deer smashed up the front of my Ranger a few years back. Over $3,000 to fix it. State Farm was very helpful.

It was a doe, and she died instantly. I was cruising about 70 at about 1:00AM and she popped out of the roadside shrubs on a dead run. I saw her about 1 millisecond before impact.

EDIT: corrected typo that SBN makde a big deal of.

JB, I never saw this one until it hit the windshield. I didn't know what it was until I saw it hit the ground. I cannot get over the thing getting away.

Re: I hit a deer.

lol@SBN!
My son had a deer hit the side of his pickup. Dented the left fender & hood. No deductable, but they did require a police report. Funny thing is, he said he saw one, but didn't expect the 2nd. I told him, usually when there's one, there's two.
The deer habitat is getting so eaten away by new construction that the deer here are migrating to other nearby woodlands. More than once I've had to get out of my vehicle and "shoo" deer out of the middle of my street when they were obstructing traffic. Strange how they'll just stand there in the middle of the road, oblivious to the horn-honking and lights-flashing, but get out to where they recognize you as a human, and they run like... well, like deer!

I've been waiting for one to hit me in my wife's car. Most of the time I see one, got the kids with me, can't have no dear antler hitting the kids now..... Maybe I'll get lucky and get that thing totaled before it's time to trade in

I'm in the same boat as ndemge. I have a crack in the plastic on the front of my truck from a snowbank a couple years ago, and I'm just waiting for a deer to hit it. No deductible for deer, $250 deductible for snowbanks ;)

Re: I hit a deer.

I think it depends on your policy - your coverage for collision is separate from underinsured/uninsured motorist, or, in this case, wildlife/livestock. My policy is $500/$250, but $zero for u/um is not uncommon - just increases the premium.

Bottom line, it depends on who's at fault. If Bambi had the right of way & you failed to yield, your collision deductible would have applied.

I could be wrong - don't rely on my statement in your lawsuit against the ins co.

The adjuster told me that it went against the comprehensive side of the policy. Bottom line, out $500.00 and didn't even get the deer.

Re: I hit a deer.

Any consolation, hit one last monday, $500 deductable and goes to the comprehensive aspect of my insurance policy. If I could have caught it, I would have stangled it with my bare hands. Road rats are real bad this year.

Re: I hit a deer.

I had a deer hit me a few nights ago while I slowed down watching the rest of them cross farther in front of me.

It tagged my bumper perfectly. It only popped part of my air dam loose and put about a 1" crack in it.

I went back to get it but it must have just knocked itself silly, as it was gone when I got there.

I was always told to tell your insurance person that the deer hit YOU and not vice versa.

I didn't turn my situation in. Nothing to squawk about anyway.

H.

Re: I hit a deer.

Only one solution for this problem.
Fit your vehicle with a set of Roo Bars (known to some as Bull Bars), not those stupid nudge bars, but the full size ones from wing to wing. They work an absolute treat.
Over here, your 4x4 ain't a 4x4 unless it has a set, :D plus if you live out of town, best to have them on your car too. Buggxrs up the Air bags tho.
The Kangaroos are a problem here. They don't run out in front of you, they bounce, and when they are on their up bounce, they are dead in line with your window, and believe me, the last thing you want is an angry Roo inside the car with you.
Took my little chap to a Scout Camp tonight, and just missed a small Roo, about 5' tall to the head.
The other fun thing about Roo's is, it is always the 2nd one you hit.
Cheers
Phillip
