A boat I might buy to swap the complete sterndrive, etc for has these stickers on valve cover. I haven't seen in person, looks like a late 80's Bayliner. I can see on the pic on middle of valve cover that it's a 181cu in. Any insight?

Re: I KNOW, I KNOW, there's a Bible about serial numbers but I'm cunfused.

There are 3 different serial numbers associated with a Mercruiser stern drive power package. One for the engine, one for the drive, and one for the bit in between the engine and the drive, the transom housing...

One of the numbers you have there (A609197) is the engine number for a 1986, 140hp, 3.0 litre (181 cubic inch)....

Three serial number stickers are supplied with each assembly. Part of the installation process is to apply one of the serial number stickers for the transom housing and the drive to the engine cover. This is to make it easier for subsequent techs to find the numbers should they become difficult to read on the drive or transom assembly. The last of each of the stickers should be put in the owners handbook. I am yet to see the correct procedure carried out on any boat! Bloody slack I call it...

So, then it's nice that it all looks so nice and clean like that. Like the motor hasn't been out or valve cover removed a million times. I know, hard to tell, but at least they're all there. For all we know, motor and outdrive could be locked up. So this would be a good package that the engine transom plate and outdrive will "bolt up" to my 64 Aristocraft Funliner with a Mercruiser 110 in it now.?

I know that my motor is A LOT less crowded than this one is ( I have no power steering, only one throttle cable, etc. ) will all that stuff on this motor fit under my narrow engine cover?

So it should be an Alpha 1. At 500 bucks, even if the motor and outdrive is locked up it should be a good deal, right?

You will need to replace everything, motor, drive, transom assembly, instruments and controls. Nothing from the old package is usable.

I know that my motor is A LOT less crowded than this one is ( I have no power steering, only one throttle cable, etc. ) will all that stuff on this motor fit under my narrow engine cover?

This engine still has only one throttle cable, but it will have 2 shift cables. One is from the controls (remote control cable) and the other goes to the drive bell-housing (lower shift cable). Your 110 is an old 2.5 litre and this 140 is a 3 litre. Physically the same size on the outside.

So it should be an Alpha 1. At 500 bucks, even if the motor and outdrive is locked up it should be a good deal, right?

1986 should be an Alpha One, yes. As for it being a good deal, only someone local and with local knowledge will be able to tell you that. If it's what you want and at a price you are prepared to pay, it's probably a good deal. :D ;)
