I just got a Bayliner Capri with a Force 85. Well I did the unthinkable, pulled the clutch plug. I am new to boats and motors and I currently have the lower off the motor and the propeller shaft all the way down to the carrier. How can I get the pin back in and should it be in Neutral? I got the hole aligned but I am not sure what the peice looks like or if there are more than one hole. Any help is appreciated and sorry if this is a repeat. Oh it is a 1987. Thanks

Welcome
The pin if it doesn't go back in then the top plate needs to come off and the shift yoke reinstalled.
Try putting the pin in.
Pull up and turn the prop and see if it makes the drive shaft turn.
Then push it down and see if it turns the other way.
NO?? Then you need to take it apart.
Make sure you don't over tighten the screws and do a pressure test to make sure it won't leak.

GS, you certainly are not the only one to have ever done that before. But if you can't install the pin in successfully again, there is no other option but disassembly and correct the shifter assembly. If you can search on the web for a breakdown of your lower foot section and see how it all works together to get a better understanding what you are trying to do, that would help tremendously...

I appreciate the answers. I think I got the clutch pin back in but have a new issue. It seems before I even put the lower back on, when moving the shift rod up and down, It seemed to work. I now have the lower back on and it is not shifting. I have the control in Neutral but the prop does not spin. It will go in rev but not forward without resistance. I also noticed if I loosen the clutch pin, the control moves easier. I am confused.

Jerry, I am guessing that is not a choice? How do I get to it? Do I need to remove the waterpump and prop shaft?

Well, I finally broke down and took my lower to a mechanic. Come to find out, the pivot pin was not even that, it was a screw. It damaged the linkage, there was a foreign matter in the far pin hole, had to replace water pump, shims, linkage, seals, labor. The guy I bought it from had it on the water 2 days prior to my buying it. I was told there was no way it would shift. I know I am down $550.00. My lower is rebuilt though. Thank you for all the help and guidance.
