I love looking in craigslist at old boats. Made it my hobby actually.

But I have always loved cars to. Old cars. Some of my favorite cars I've owned (and I've owned 35 or so) are:
1967 Corvette convertable with 427 400hp tri-power (3 carbs)
1979 Datsun 280ZX
1979 Trans Am
1980 Trans Am
1973 Chevy Pick-up with a 454

I dream of:
1978 Smokey and the Bandit Trans Am
1970-71 Formula
another '67 vette

Had a '65 'tang fastback, 289 HP with the 4 speed.
'70 Mach-1
And now have a '64 El Camino, 350 4 bolt bored out 30+ with a 350 Turbo, rebuilt with shift kit.
It's real fast with the 6 cylinder rear end under it.:D

This motorhead lusts for a different style of machine. More precision refinement than hairy chested brute force.

I had a couple of brutes when I was young. . .'58 Studie Golden Hawk with blower, '38 Ford coupe with very modified 59AB Merc flathead. But then I drove a '58 Mercedes 220SE and I was in love with German engineering.

Later had a BMW 700 Super Sport (car, not bike). Like a class C GoKart for the street.

I have since had 8 Mercedes, including 3 Diesels, 280SE, 450SE, 190SL, and two MLs. I think My 1999 ML430 is the best vehicle (for me) I have ever owned.

Do you still have that 67' Vette? (that series of Stingray is my no.1 choice in desireable classic cars).
That said, here is quick pick of my other Saturday toy. It's a 66' Chevy I bought in Florida about 10 years ago.
It's a great little truck but I have to find more time for it. It's a little tough for my wife to drive without P.S/P.B. I have all the parts to do the upgrades...not I have to find the time.
I never seem to get short on projects.

NAA-NAA-NAAANA-NAA! I own a 76 Smoky and the Bandit original - 42k on her. They were Pontiac's "50th Anniversary Trans Am." Man, I love that car, but hardly ever let her see the sun - and NEVER the rain! :)

NAA-NAA Yourself. Smokey and the Bandit was a '77 or 78 with the square double headlight. Yours was round headlights if i'm not misstaken. In '79 they had the headlights molded into the front bumper.

That being said, I'd take your '76 in a flash. Post a pic:)

I'll have to get it out and take some pics - yes, mine has the round headlights and was actually billed as the first S&B, but they only produced a little over 1800 of them in 76 ...

I would trade you a '76/'77' and a '78 for a '73 455SD all day long....anyone have one of those babies?
Interestingly the '77/'78's are going through bit of retro/nostalgia resurgence...possibly smokey and bandit related. They are probably now a reasonable investment so long as they are mint.

Police clock British man driving at 172 mph

Rental car worker jailed for 10 weeks after breaking record in Porsche

LONDON - A rental car worker who was clocked at 172 mph in his company?s Porsche was ordered jailed Monday for 10 weeks.

Tim Brady, 33, who was caught Jan. 27, became the fastest speeder ever convicted in Britain. He beat the previous record ? 156 mph ? set by car dealer Jason McAllister in 2003.

Brady was caught driving the $198,000 Porsche 911 Turbo, which he took from his employer, luxury car rental firm HelpHire PLC, authorities said.

Brady had nagged his boss to take the Porsche out the day before, but was repeatedly told no, authorities said.

Judge David Morton called the act ?criminally self-indulgent.?

?(You were) utterly thoughtless of the danger you might be creating for the innocent,? he told Brady.

Brady, who admitted to dangerous driving, was banned from driving for three years and will have to take a new driving test before taking to the road again.

He quit his job a day after he was caught.

Re: I love boats, I love cars

Why does everyone have to rub it in my face that I have no money or time to get an old car to work on.

No time is the biggest holdup, perhaps in 5-10 years when the kids are a bit older.

My son will need a car in 5 yrs and I already promised him a big POS for him to drive. He still isnt really interested in cars yet, my dad couldnt chase me away from the cars from when I was in diapers.

Ken...you're swimming in nice rust free stuff down there...get in on it!!
Maybe a good time to start looking at a 'father and son project' for a few years down the road. That said, the biggest hurdle is sometimes convincing the 'better half' of your intentions with the new surprise in the garage. That seems to be often the barrier.
Good luck!!

Hey KIZ, I will probably be selling my T/A in about 10 years - just before my daughter gets her license. Don't want her thinking she can drive it! :D Ya interested in it then? :p

Re: I love boats, I love cars

I hopefully get dads 1989 C2500, currently with about 400k on it, as a main driver, but would like to save up and get something like this, just with the taller tires, round tubing homemade roll cage, and the double round tubing front bumper, (homemade of course) I would like to make something like this into my tinker toy, and fun driver.

That said, here is quick pick of my other Saturday toy. It's a 66' Chevy I bought in Florida about 10 years ago.

I bought the '67 vette when I was 20 yrs old and had no money. It was sitting in a barn for 12yrs on blocks. Motor was in peaces all over the farm(in Kansas). Tranny in the dirt. Hood against the barn wall. Dead cats behind the seat. Heater ducts in another shed...

I bought this car for 6k and put it in another barn and put the hood back on. Some guy offered me 10k for it. Being broke with 2 other cars, I took it.

Now this is what it looks like.

I still wouldn't have the money to fix it up so it's a good thing I sold it to someone who would. It's now worth 200k+.

Here is what is in my garage now. It's a '74 Corvette conv.. My brother in Houston bought it and got tired of it. So he gave it to my son Ethan who is pictured with it. He has to stay out of serious trouble until he's 18 and then he gets the title.

Sorry, the pic is too big to fit. I'll post it tomorrow.

btw bp1, very nice truck

Re: I love boats, I love cars

How about Mopars with big block 440's or a Hemi, or a 4,600 lb 1965 Lincoln Continental with a 440, Mopar front suspension and rear axle that run 14.90 in the quarter mile still pulling in second gear? I built one years ago. The car would do a second gear burnout at about half track (had 2.76 gears in back, it was fun on the freeway). Someday I want to get a Split Window 'Vette and make it a big block tri-power but it will be a Mopar 440 Six Pack. I know the Chevy guys wont like me too much.

...a 440 in a stingray? well thats a new one for me. I would love to 500ci Caddy engine in something....maybe a dodge cricket. (just kidding). I would probably go with the L79 in the 63-67 series....just to be a little different. I also think that until I see a big block then I reconsider.

Re: I love boats, I love cars

Wow! Some nice cars, & trucks in this thread. I've had a few nice vehicles myself, (see my signature) aside from the few I bought new, or almost new, (which I usually took a loss on from having them so long) I used to buy the interesting fixer uppers at a bargain, fix them up, use them for awhile, then sell them at a small profit, usually because they became no longer practical for me at the time, or I had no place to store them. Wish I had the money they are all worth today.

Here is my boys car I was talking about in my post above.

I too used to by fixer uppers and use them for a while and sell for a small profit and sometimes a loss. Had a lot of fun with that.:)

whitehouse, I hope you are keeping the engine and the tires warm until he reaches 18.

My dream car is a 68 Mercury Cougar XR-7 with 4 speed. I am still mad I do not purchase a fixer upper in 1994 for $800.

My dad had a '73 TA...but it wasn't an SD. Still a sweet ride though. He sold it to my brother about 20 years ago and it lived a hard life while he had it. He had some financial problems last year and ended up selling it. I was suprised he got as much for it as he did since all the pain/bodywork was poorly done.
