I recently bought a 84 21' Dusky center console with a 200 HP evinrude. The engine starts and runs fine. My problem is when I am in the water I can not get the bought to go over 8 MPH. Every once in awhile the RPMS will increase and before I know it it is planed out and going 50 MPH. It will only stay at top speed for about 5 minutes till it goes back down to 8 MPH. The engine sounds good and does not sound like it is missing. Any help would be awesome.

Could be power packs. Just a thought. Had an old 60hp that did the same thing.

Thanks for advice. The power packs were replaced last year, which I guess doesnt really mean theyre good. I did notice that the hand primer bulb does not really get very hard even after it is running. But I have never had a problem starting it.

How about a compression and spark check.
Primer bulb is just that. Just a fuel line after it is primed.

Im far from a boat mechanic but a friend bought a boat a few weeks ago and was doing the same thing. The connection on the gas tank was stripped and taking in alot of air and keeping it from running much at all. Also the primar bulb wouldnt get hard or take hardly any gas in at all.

So could possibly be the fuel line sucking in air some where.
